to say I am shocked and sad beyond belief is an understatement. one of the greatest musicians and artists of the last 40 years. I own almost everything he released. a pure genius. just had phase one on at work a few days ago

Talk about the worst irony ever that this wraps right before he passed away

Now listening to 3121. It's much better than I remembered. :) It's the hotter, quirkier and more open minded latin sister of Musicology.

  5. I think the songs are a lot better on 3121 (but not the mastering). Fury is one of his best rock tunes, and Love and Lolita should have been hits.

I completely agree. Lolita should've been released as the lead single. It would've definitely charted on the Hot 100. It's retro meets future.

"Lolita" is great, but I think "Black Sweat" is his best post-2000 single, and I was surprised it wasn't more of a hit.

"Black Sweat" is quite catchy. The synths sounds incredibly filthy and freaky. It's too sexual for the average listener. :p

VH1 had a "Prince: A Tribute" running on Friday evening and they included "Black Sweat", I think it was the first time that I have seen the video with proper picture quality. I enjoyed hearing it a lot and was glad they included something later (they also included "Musicology"), it is a great track (maybe a bit too stripped down sounding to become a hit with the "average listener").

I was in Stockholm visiting a friend when "all this" happened, and I had intended to go out on Friday evening to see if there was anywhere out where they were playing Prince, to maybe get into a celebratory mood instead of mourning, but when I saw they were playing his videos I ended up in front of the TV instead.

After 12 years of trying - Lovesexy has finally clicked with me, I'm now happy to rank it alongside his other masterpieces.

Although, I'm not entirely down with some of the more religious lyrical content, I can now hear that he utterly felt like he was 'saved' - the atmosphere in Anna Stesia even makes me feel like I am being visited by a higher power. Elsewhere, the arrangements on tracks like Eye No and LoveSexy are so dazzlingly complex, they make Zappa sound like Jack Johnson. Alphabet Street is still the first Prince song that I ever loved And some of his best guitar and bass work was in I Wish U Heaven and Dance On respectively.

Once the issues around his estate are sorted out, they NEED to rerelease the official tour film. It would convert anyone who doesn't believe in Prince's mad genius.

It's my 3rd favorite Prince album. I'd probably rank Dirty Mind and 1999 just behind it.

Which album has the best 12"s? Difficult to decide among Purple Rain, Around the World in a Day and Parade. I think Parade has the best a side extended versions, but it's b sides are not as gigantic as Erotic City and She's Always in My Hair' long cuts. I can't recall if there's a long version for 17 days. I only have it as a 7" b side

Yeah, I think it's not only his best album, but one of the best of the decade - up there with Hounds of Love and the like. I think it's noteworthy because it really shouldn't work, but works perfectly. Proving nothing succeeds like excess!

    I kinda agree.
    SOTT first, than Parade.
Maybe just because of the number of songs. 1999, Dirty Mind and Purple Rain have a less number of songs.
All those albums are VERY good, so it's hard to pick one over the other.

oh I forgot the Black Album. that should be at #10, and Graffiti Bridge at #11
