If I lived within a 5-6 hours drive, I would find a way to attend. Actually, wish I could have went last year even more when Morris Day, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis and others(forget who all were part of it) were at this event, but only found out about it after it happened, and who were the attending Musicians. Still looks like a great event this year, as loved Prince Albums made with the NPG Band Members(seem to add more Muscular FUNK to those Albums and always preferred that Band over the Revolution-although YMMV).

  3. Jesus! And a bank bag labeled "OPIUM."

But really, does a person keeping opium in the house need to label the bag "opium?" It seems unlikely. That's like keeping some weed in your place, in a jar, or a box, and writing "WEED" on the container. It just doesn't make sense.

I spent some time reading Judith Hill's testimony about the night of the Atlanta show and the emergency landing. She claims that Prince was mumbling stuff about not wanting to live any longer, or wondering if he had already done all he could in this life, or some such talk. According to Hill, Tyka told her at the memorial service that Tyka had known for two years that Prince wouldn't be around for much longer.

    Weird.

If I was one of the officers gaining access to the Vault, I think I'd still be there!

Don't knock it, duderino. That's how I find my stash when I wake up. On that thing I have labeled 'couch', for some reason. Seems more like a sofa. Well, anyway.

It's been two years today and he's still sorely missed.

Somewhere in the course of this day I will listen to my extended version of "Purple Rain", the album that made me a life long fan. I based it on a 24/192 vinyl rip (RIP) of the 2009 release, augmented with tracks from the deluxe edition and spliced in bits from the extended versions of "Beautiful Ones" and "Darling "Nikki". I edited the album ending back on the "Hallway Speech" version of "Computer Blue", so it still segues into "Nikki".

This is how I listen to the album nowadays...

Let's Go Crazy (Special Dance Mix)
    Take Me With U
    The Beautiful Ones (Full Version)
    Father's Song
    Computer Blue ("Hallway Speech" Version)
    Darling Nikki (Full Version)
God (Love Theme From Purple Rain)
    When Doves Cry
    I Would Die 4 U
    Baby I'm A Star
    Purple Rain

Wow, amazing pictures, you can see why it's taking so long to go through it. I have no problem with them taking their time, if it gets us real quality releases in the coming years.

Echo Wolfram's post above, much missed, can't believe it's two years.

My family were leaving for a trip to Florida the day he passed and when we arrived at the hotel, the fountain outside was lit up purple instead of its usual colours. Thought that was lovely.

  9. My post from page 1 of this thread, two years ago today.

I still remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard the news. At that time the news was only reporting that there was a dead body discovered at Paisley Park. It wasn't confirmed to be Prince yet. It didn't take long for the news to bounce back and confirm that it was P.

When it was still just "a body" at Paisley Park, I know it was wrong of me, but I began thinking like, "Oh man, I hope it was an old cleaning lady they found, or maybe a party goer who had too much junk," but I knew it was him. Deep down I knew, after the emergency scare a few days before.

I recall at one point the news saying that there was a 9-1-1 call, so that gave me a little hope that help was on the way.

It all went so fast. Then he was gone.

    RIP - absolute legend.

It was 40 years go this month that his first album was released. Written, composed, produced and performed by Prince.

He would have been 60 in a couple of months.

I miss Prince, but at least we have a lot of music from him to enjoy for eternity .

I miss Prince. There's no artist that will ever fill that void for me. I was always excited to see what he'd do next be it random gigs at a week (or less) notice, dropping albums or new singles out of the blue or hearing about another unrealised project that was added to his vault. His work ethic alone for creating new music is what every musician should take note of (it's amazing to think what Prince created in a month would be a 2 year album cycle for most bands or artists!).

  14. It just dawned on me that even with Prince two years gone, he's still the greatest songwriter/multi-instrumentalist alive.

He's alive as long as we carry him with us.

I confess. I peeked. But the only reaction I personally have is identical to zen's above.

There are law enforcement concerns, of course, and they were stated the first day after PRN died. I liked George Harrison, too, but, sorry (PAUL!), as well intentioned as you are, you don't get to fake the official death records or circumvent legal practice when someone dies, just because they were beloved. Even if they deserved it as much as Prince and George did.

  19. What did you take a peek at? The death photos, and all of the TMZ stuff?

There was a (non-TMZ) site with four pics of the deceased as he was found (I could only download 3). Pics were also emblazoned with the site's custom watermarks, which I'm kinda thankful for.

The TMZ vault pics? Now that's like a porn stash. I could NOT look away from... that old computer.. those VHSes. Oy. (Did I see some kind of BASF projector thingy? Pic was too small, but the hardware looked old old OLD school.)

Oh, and the ignorance on the part of the press about that famous spoon-and-cherry sculpture housed in the Twin Cities provided much-needed levity. And while one needs a very dark sense of humor to laugh at some things, the image of someone crushing tablets with that tiny souvenir reproduction made me giggle.

  21. Yeah, I looked at the un-blurred photos, too. I wish I hadn't...sort of.

It's weird to think, people have wanted death photos going all the way back to Jessie James, and before. People often paid money to see them. Folks used to publicly display corpses of famous people, outlaws, and all sorts. That's what an open casket funeral is, really, only more private. None of this is new, is it? Abraham Lincoln, Kennedy, Monroe, Lenny Bruce, James Brown, the list goes on and on. I don't know. Yeah, I wish I hadn't looked. I sort of stumbled across them while reading.

I'll say this about Prince's body, though; I've seen a lot of bodies while in the funeral business and the military, and seldom have a seen a better looking corpse than Prince. No fooling. I'm not just telling myself that to ease my pain. He looks pretty close to just being asleep. I think Prince would like that, that he made a good looking corpse. Even in death the guy was 100% fly.

EDIT: goddammit, I wish I hadn't see that, though! I can't unsee it.I'll have to wash my mind with watching performances and seeing him happy.

    NEW PRINCE UNRELEASED ALBUM
    OUT IN SEPTEMBER

Last week, two days before the second anniversary of Prince’s death, his estate released a bounty of new stuff celebrating his work and his relationship with his fans: Not only the previously unreleased — and largely unheard — original version of “Nothing Compares 2 U” and an accompanying video of remarkable rehearsal footage, but also two new websites, one of them a deep dive into his discography including rare photos, videos and loads of information; the other a site where fans can share their remembrances called “Prince2me.”

It was a strong first salvo of “mind blowing” material to come from the new caretakers of the artist’s estate, led by entertainment adviser Troy Carter and his company Atom Factory (Carter is also global head of creator services for Spotify). Prince was fiercely protective of his music and kept a large percentage of it — even some of his most popular videos and songs for which he didn’t feel he was properly compensated — locked away in his much-vaunted “Vault.” In the year since Carter took charge, the musical archives have been transported to a climate-controlled Iron Mountain facility in Los Angeles, where they’re being archived, restored and in some cases prepared for release.

It's interesting that they're referring to the upcoming album as a "piece" they "found", or maybe I'm reading too much into it, just like the interviewer in the article ("that makes it sound like a single piece of work")...

I like that they finally also mention the "non-Warner music", even if there is no real news about what's happening, but at least they are dealing with that too, and I also like that they say: "We have a very specific plan around the music, because we don’t want to just dump things into the marketplace and have things out just to have them out." (Even if it feels like that is exactly what they did with "NC2U").
