I assume you're the same person who fades out "Layla" when the piano starts.

The guitar solo at the end just kicks ass.

  3. That was most FM stations, too.

The 1980s were absolutely terrible for music in the USA. But not because of the artists- because of the dumbed-down narrowcast corporate radio, the massive increase in commercials and DJs who treated music as if it were an interruption between commercials, and the spurious production values that prevailed in the industry in that decade.

The music itself turned out to be pretty good, actually. It's just that only a small fraction of it was heard, and it often wasn't the good stuff.

That guitar solo rocks! I love it personally, I think that and the bombastic drums at the end of the guitar solo with the "take me away!" hit really gives that song the grandiose, big epic sound that is the perfect way to kick off the album

I'm one of those who fades out the piano coda of Layla and the pointless chanting finale to Hey Jude, but the ending of Let's Go Crazy is just the best in rock history. I love it. It's fun, witty, tantalising, almost, but not quite, over the top, just the greatest.

Very old-school, almost vaudevillian approach (let's throw in an animal act, a comedian, and some dancing girls). Lets you know things are over. Love it, but it does make a wee bit more sense on the extended/movie version. Still, no complaints.

He's claimed that the "elevator" metaphor was a compromise worked out in favor of referring to satan.

So it could have been worse. Much worse.

Fab song. Fab ending. It works beautifully to set up the immediate transitions into "Take Me With You". Fab..

Oh, that speech. I thought driverdrummer meant the opening post.

And I love how the song ends.

    Dearly beloved
    We are gathered here today
To get through this thing called life

    Electric word life
It means forever and that's a mighty long time
But I'm here to tell you
    There's something else
    The after world

A world of never ending happiness
You can always see the sun, day or night

So when you call up that shrink in Beverly Hills
You know the one, Dr. Everything'll Be Alright
Instead of asking him how much of your time is left
Ask him how much of your mind, baby

    'Cause in this life
Things are much harder than in the after world
    In this life
    You're on your own

And if the elevator tries to bring you down
Go crazy, punch a higher floor

    Consider the era.
The 80s was the time of shredding.
But I do like it a lot.
It's very dramatic and a great climatic moment to a high octane track.

Got a lot of fond memories of it from '84.
Dance floor would fill up on the intro, and as the syn drums started, bodies would start moving.
There was a lot of applauding and shouting when Prince broke it down at the end.
    Good times.

Agreed, but even worse is the wobbly organ that's playing underneath the speech. Its got a pretty extreme "wow & flutter"/"in & out" sound that I would assume is maybe (assuming its played on a real organ) the leslie rotating speaker setting. I always found that super annoying especially since the speech laid on top of it only compounds the annoyance factor!

Other than that - great track!

Ending at 3:12 would have been OK I guess ending on the IV and not resolving. Pretty cool. However, the descending line before 3:12 is pretty much a descension off the main ascending riff. He really adds some needed tension to the song by stopping at the C sharp and playing his F# blues based killer solo. It brings the song to a higher level as far a craziness goes. I really like the traditional blues turnaround that he follows with. The song is pretty much a blues. I think what he did really spiced up the song...too repetitive sounding with out the final section.
Let's Go Crazy? Well, he showed us how with that amazing final turnaround section.
