Maybe he can offer more clues, I trust his ears. He touched on it awhile back and with that I skipped it

    Hey Cory and Peter,

Although I did get the 2013 HD Tracks download because a number of people here liked it, I don't have a lot of knowledge about an overall consensus. I can share my experience, though. I have heard three of the four masterings listed above. The 2017 is far too compressed to be a contender for me and the 2013 HD Tracks is a bit rolled off in the upper frequencies compared to my 20P2-2611 (same mastering as the old US CD), so while the 20P2-2611 isn't perfect, it is the best mastering that I have heard for Purple Rain.

Listening to the remaster, does anyone else hear on the "double bass drum" part of Darling Nikki there being some distortion? I was comparing to the HD Tracks version and the remaster has a lot more of a grimey unclean sound to it - it sounds horrid!! Wow

I listened to that part again and I am not sure if it is just the compression itself bringing up all the grime that was hidden or if its clipping

That's where I am right now. Just getting around to the listening of it for a variety of reasons. I, too, consider myself pretty forgiving about remasters and I can handle a small measure of added compression, but I don't recall ever hearing such an awful remaster in my life as Disc 1 of the 2017 Purple Rain remaster. Tin-eared and tasteless! Pretty astonishing that WB and Grundman didn't succeed in making an intervention here. Thank goodness the original CD sounded as good as it did! I thought it might be improved upon, however, but this ain't it by a long stretch. Nice to have discs 2-3, though...

I was glad to buy the 3 -CD/DVD Set for the first week sale price at Best Buy of $24(or might have been $25) for the 2nd & 3rd CDs & DVD Syracuse Concert(mostly for the 2nd CD & DVD).

On a related note, I bought the 4 CD Set, 'One Last Kiss'-The Radio Sessions' as it sounds ok for a bootleg and the music is awesome(although not sure Prince is even playing on the 1st CD, which has Larry Graham, Chaka Khan and others, but great music on it). I also bought the Bootleg 2-CD Set for the Syracuse Concert that was from the DVD in the Purple Rain Deluxe Set, but that CD does not sound too good.

That is what I bought. It just does not sound as good as the 'One Last Kiss-Complete Radio Sessions' 4 CD Set. That set is $26 when I bought it on Amazon, so if you love Prince, I would recommend it.

  12. Yeah but it's a terrible sounding remastered cd. Such a shame.

Would the newest Vinyl of Purple Rain(2017 of the 2015 Prince Supervised Remastered still done by KG) be just as bad, or a little better(like the 2017 Sgt. Pepper Remix by Giles Martin where several SHF Members mentioned that the Vinyl Sound Quality was better than the 2017 Remixed CD)? I already bought the last KG Remastered version of Purple Rain(2009?), so did not see the point in buying it again, especially if the 2017 release(2015 version supervised by Prince but still Remastered by KG) is not any better than the first KG Remastered Version.

Especially, since just getting into building a small Vinyl Collection, did not see a point to buy the 2nd most recent Purple Rain Vinyl Release. I did buy the Picture Disc more as being a piece of art for display, since reading on here that Picture Disc do not provide good Sound Quality(in most cases).

  14. Have my original Purple Rain LP which actually sounds good. Haven't heard the new version. Someone else might chime in.

Sorry know it's probably been answered but is the new LP any better than the remastered LP that was brought out the other year on 180g.

I know it's only the album itself so can't decide weather too buy again ?

    Miss Prince...

My copy of the 2017 remastered Purple Rain has sat on the shelf unopened since I bought it a couple months ago. Spotify has had it streaming and the "additional" cuts are songs or versions of songs I have in my collection already. It's still missing tunes from the movie. What remastered version number will it be until we get them ALL in one package?

I made my own. Dez's Moderaire track is finally available (if you get it, don't bother with the other songs on the EP, they aren't him, just remixes / covers from other people), so I threw all the tracks together (with the Time and Apollonia songs).

Ha. Yeah, I think most fans of the soundtrack have compiled their own versions of PR. Revising mine again as I just heard Vanity 6's version of Sex Shooter!

Though the instrumentation is funkier the quality is poor. Wish I had a copy of the master. The extended Apollonia 6 version is fine.

Modernaire is cool. I guess Dance Electric was supposed to be it's replacement.

I just go with all the songs in the film in order as they were played (including God, Possessed, etc. that were background pieces), then the 12" versions.

What a lousy sound cd. Too bad.
