True enuff, I have to agree.

So what would you recommend, Steve, to dub old vinyl to CDR?

Get a standalone CD recorder and move it in to the other room with your real turntable.

    egad!

Well, I am about to get a TT again. I posted in another thread that it's a Pioneer PL-10.

Steve, I know that you said you used a PL-12 (?) or something like it for years.

Will I potentially be destroying my vinyl with this old TT? I will be getting a new cart and belt for it.

Maybe I should just save my pennies....

That will work for you IF you put a Shure V15 type anything in there. This is the one, correct?

Yeah, that looks just like it. I will be picking it up in a couple of weeks. The seller lives right near my hometown, and I'll be there on vacation so I am just going to pick it up. No danger of shipping damage!

The guy is the original owner too. The picture showed the manual in its plastic cover (although now that I think of it, did Pioneer even wrap their manuals in plastic back then? I don't think so.) Well, at least it looked clean! Even if this turns out to be a bust, for 41 dollars, I'm not too worried.

I'll definitely get the Shure cart. Thanks Steve.

Looks real sweet with that glass platter (it IS glass right?). How's the sound?

Oh, the sound is just great. Capitol Records original pressings sound great on this, for some reason. I play a lot of Lettermen Lps on this and the soundstage is spectacular.

Whats kinda nutty about this table is that you change speeds by taking the platter off and moving the belt!!

Dumb design!! But it sounds nice.

Lots of TT's do that, Mikey. My Rega and Ariston TT speeds have to be changed like that!

The Dual's "trip" mechanism, the thing that causes record wear with changers at the end of the side, is quite benign, much more so than, say, a Garrard's or BSR's. Certainly no worse than the one on the good old Pioneer PL-12D. However I agree it's probably not worth putting much effort into. It's never going to sound great.

If you really do want to get into it, try cleaning that motor.

Well, Ive also found out that I have the Dual 1229Q which had "Carbon Fiber" in the Tonearm which was supposed be the top of the line then.

But, I'm thinking that I'll just use the Rotel for ny CDR transfers, what the hell, I have it already.

    Mikey,
I just wanted to add that I agree with Steve here. No matter how much I tried to adjust the cart on my Dual 1246, it would always start to distort on the inner tracks.
I just got a Fons CQ30 with a Grace 707 arm and man, what I difference!
The cart aligns perfectly. The sound rocks too:)
Like Steve said, I'm beginning to believe it's all in the tonearm and it's tracking ability;)

    Millerdog,

That's why I dumped my Dual. Inner Groove distortion went away after I did, even with a $100.00 Pioneer PL-12.
