In advance of the approaching July 4 national birthday bash, name some prominent musicians who were born and/or spent their formative years in the state of your residence. Feel free to add to or correct any of the entries below, as I mainly avoided using Wikipedia or web searches while compiling the list, which is far from authoritative. Two more for North Carolina. I know the dBs also came from North Carolina, but I'm not sure if its two principles - Peter Holsapple & Chris Stamey - were born and raised there. If so, North Carolina appears to be a rather fertile ground for musicians (relative to its population).

lists like this are bound to be endless. Artists born and raised in or whom cut their teeth in any given state could be immense.

Alex Chilton was living in New Orleans when he died but Memphis, Tennessee was where he was born and raised (and spent much of his professional career). No matter, New Orleans, LA has produced enough native sons and daughters as it is!

Please add Tom Petty and Ray Charles to Florida.

edit: I guess Ray doesn't count because he was born in Georgia but moved as an infant. Shame, as his formative years were certainly in Florida.

Although Bolin spent the early part of his professional career in Denver and Boulder, Sioux City, Iowa - where he was born, raised and buried - gets to lay claim to him.

Brad Paisley was born in and and spent his formative years in West Virginia. That'll fill in an empty slot.

Ok, but how do you define "formative years"? He was still a teenager when he moved to Boulder, Colorado. Just curious :)!

For Connecticut, you can add Horace Silver (Norwalk), Charles Ives (Danbury), Diana Ross (Greenwich), Moby (Darien), and Nile Rodgers (Westport). Obviously this mixes and matches people who were in the state at various phases of their careers, but they all spent significant time in the state.

When he hit it big, everyone said he was from Lewiston, ME (which is where he lived as an adult), but Wikipedia says he was born in NH and grew up in Utah, so maybe you can cross 3 states off the list! :righton:

He was in his late teens when he relocated to Denver and had already been appearing on stage with bands while residing in Sioux City, Iowa. But I can totally understand wanting to lay claim to Bolin.:)
