As any good Bob Dylan fan knows, the next volume of his acclaimed Bootleg Series is dropping on November 6th (October 30th if a certain rumor is true), and it's The Big One. Sony/Dylan sources have been hinting at a massive Blonde On Blonde box set for years now, and now (thanks to European copyright requirements) Volume 12 is even bigger than that, covering the sessions for all three seminal "electric" albums: Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, and of course, Blonde On Blonde. The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 (BS12) -- subtitled "The Cutting Edge" for some reason -- is undoubtedly "holy grail" material for many fans.

BS12 will also be, in its "Limited Edition," the largest-ever Bootleg Series release, at a whopping 18 CDs. In this (unfortunately priced) mega-box, listeners will delight to what Sony claims is "every note recorded" by Bob Dylan and friends during the making of these three legendary albums (and contemporary singles). Setting aside the controversy over the cost, this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to be a fly on the wall at the recording sessions for three albums that shook the rock world. For the first time ever, we can hear -- in real time -- the full story of how Dylan found that thin, wild mercury sound and stunned fans the world over in 1965 and 1966. (And this is not to exclude the buyers of the 2-CD distillation or the 6-CD "Deluxe Edition" -- both will offer similar, albeit less exhaustive, joys.)

The fans who were lucky enough to be of age 50 years ago should remember what it was like the first time they heard "Subterranean Homesick Blues" on the radio. But what of Bob's younger fans, who were born AFTER he had gone through this phase -- and several others -- and who have grown up knowing that Bob was a chameleon, a changeling, a shape-shifter? Is it possible to wipe our memories of "Electric Bob" (1965-66), "Country Bob" (1969-1970), "Comeback Bob" (1974-1976), "Gospel Bob" (1979-1982), et al.? Can we force ourselves to forget everything but the folk troubadour of 1961-1964, so that we can play BS12 on November 6th and have our minds blown like it was 1965 again?

I think it can be done, and I'm inviting anyone who wants to try to come along for the ride. I started working on this project a month ago -- shortly after BS12 was announced -- and I wanted to share it while there was still a week or two to go before we spend the following weeks (months? years?) grappling with the sounds on the 2/6/18 CDs of BS12. I didn't just want to listen to the four acoustic albums again (Bob Dylan, Freewheelin', The Times They Are A-Changin' and Another Side of Bob Dylan), I wanted to IMMERSE myself in his early career, with live recordings, demos and outtakes all considered. So with the help of Clinton Heylin's Recording Sessions book, Wikipedia and various Bootleg Series liner notes, I made a massive playlist of every officially-released recording of Bob's from 1961 through 1964. It was never a truly complete list -- I knew I wasn't going to want to listen to ten straight takes of "Mixed Up Confusion" no matter how cool that song is -- but at it's longest it was over 300 songs and well over 20 hours of music.

I've "curated" it down to 180 songs -- that's almost exactly 12 hours of "Folk Bob" and about what I could possibly listen to in one day. I'll be playing this on a loop for the next week (or two), stubbornly insisting to myself that this is all there is to this Bob Dylan fellow, and I have no idea what I'll be hearing when a large cinderblock-sized box arrives at my door one day. As best I could, I put the songs in chronological order according to recording date; when dates were vague within a month I used creative license in order to keep a good flow going. After years of listening to a 25-track "greatest hits" playlist for this period, this "immersion" playlist has been absolutely revelatory. Songs I haven't paid attention to in ages seem fresh and new again, and with everything jumbled out of their album order, I never know what to expect next. Bootleg Series Vol. 9: The Witmark Demos -- which has always been too long and tedious to listen to all the way through -- is great now that it's broken up into chunks in between album sessions and live recordings. The scope of the Freewheelin' sessions is put into stark relief on this playlist, as they stretch out for over a year and are broken up by several demo tapings and three landmark live recordings (Finjan Club, Gaslight Cafe and Town Hall).

But enough talkin' -- here's the playlist. This is the one I like; you'll probably want to add some things I left off, or remove some things I left in. With only a few exceptions, I included all the "master" takes from the four official albums. For the demos, I tried to include at least one track from every session, and I favored unique songs that didn't appear elsewhere to "classics" that appear almost unchanged on an album. For the concert recordings, I trimmed some songs to avoid excessive repetition -- otherwise "Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" would be on here 20 times! -- and again favored songs that didn't appear anywhere else. I did leave the last concert -- as released on Bootleg Series Vol. 6 -- intact, as it seemed like a joyous celebration of his past favorites but with a strong hint of what was to come in the unknown future of 1965. The final track brings the whole 180-song playlist full circle -- the electric "test" version of "House Of The Rising Sun" that was prepared by Tom Wilson in late 1964, perhaps anticipating Bob's first full-blown electric sessions of January 1965. Or something, I don't know -- that last track is a bit of a mystery to me, because Bob Dylan is a folk musician, and he would never stoop to playing noisy electric blues and rock like that. ;) :D

NOTES: I used the 2010 mono CDs for the official albums, because they are mastered a little quieter than the "standard" stereo CDs, and they are a closer match to the Copyright Extension releases, which are a LOT quieter than standard Dylan CDs. For the Town Hall and Carnegie Hall shows, I used bootleg sources, because (a) they sound almost perfect and (b) it was easier than piecing them together from the many official releases they are scattered on. "Black Cross" from the Minnesota Hotel Tape is from a boot, but since it's in the Public Domain now I guess it's legal. Everything else here is from an official release.

    Yes, great job! :righton:

Unless I missed them, there are the Dylan recordings at the 1963 Newport Folk Festival, including "Blowin' In the Wind" (7/26/63) from "The Newport Folk Festival - 1963, The Evening Concerts, Vol. 1" album (Vanguard). A couple more tracks from that same date can be found on the "Newport Broadside" collection: "Playboys And Playgirls" (with Pete Seeger) and "With God On Our Side" (with Joan Baez)

Fantastic list Sean! Great job. A project like that takes a lot of patience.

I think that you missed 'John Brown', though.

Although the playlist isn't all-inclusive, I did completely forget about Newport performances AND the Broadside tracks. Since they're historically important, I would maybe sprinkle a few of them in there -- "Ballad Of Donald White" (5/62), "Train A-Travelin'" (11/62), "Talkin' Devil" (1/63) and <sigh> "John Brown" (2/63) from the Broadside records; and pick your own favorites from Newport 1963 and 1964. All the live Newport songs I have (on the "Other Side Of The Mirror" DVD) have live versions somewhere on the playlist. The Newport recordings that I consider "crucial" are the ones from 1965, a year that doesn't exist in my current Dylan reality.
Actually, I didn't miss "John Brown" -- literally and metaphorically! :shake: After listening to this stuff almost continuously for several weeks, there are a handful of early Dylan tracks that I never need to hear again -- and "John Brown," "The Walls Of Red Wing," and "Ballad In Plain D" are among them. Although I tried to keep every Dylan original in there in some form, I did cut these three -- and "Motorpsycho Nitemare" at the very end, because I wanted 180 tracks, not 181! :sigh:

I'm speechless...that's one of the most thorough and all-encompassing collections of early Dylan that I've ever come across. You even took the time to cite the source of each track, with the take numbers.

And the way that you sequenced them would make those 180 performances very, very listenable indeed. Well done, thank you.

I couldn't agree with you more about Ballad in Plain D, a song I'd rather forget, and Walls of Red Wing does drone on a bit, doesn't it? But John Brown, a song that I used to avoid whenever possible, has drawn me back in since I heard the Staples Singers do a version of it, and then, while revisiting some old Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem albums, I listened to their live version of Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye, which has equally graphic and disturbing imagery regarding a soldier returning from battle. Dylan has admitted borrowing heavily from the Clancy's & Makem during the '60s (Pretty Peggy-O, Ramblin' Gamblin' Willie, and Restless Farewell, to name a few), and making that connection also made me reconsider John Brown.

I'm gonna look at your list in depth after I have more coffee, and see how much of it I can appropriate for my own listening "purification" process...Thanks again.

Thanks so much -- and yeah, it's an amazingly "listenable" playlist. I've already found some tracks that got ordered wrong ("072 Tomorrow Is A Long Time [Demo 12/62]" for example should go after the 11/62 demos, and not in the middle of an album session), and I'll probably add "important" tracks as people suggest them (like the Broadside and Newport tracks) -- so I'll probably end up posting an updated track list later this week. My original impulse was to leave it more "complete" and just be overwhelmed by the sheer tonnage of material, but this is much more fun to listen to. With everything in digestable chunks -- a few studio takes, a couple of demos, a handful of live tracks, rinse and repeat -- you really feel like you're listening to Bob grow up in front of your eyes (ears). The "Freewheelin' Era" alone is stunning, and would make an amazing Bootleg Series release in its own right. It would be all previously released stuff, but sequenced and mastered properly it would be worth every penny of "double-dipping."
Well, after jamesmaya brought up the Broadside tracks, I went back and revisited them and realized that the Broadside "John Brown" is probably my favorite one, so that went back into the playlist, along with "Train A-Travelin'," "Talkin' Devil" and "The Ballad Of Donald White" -- all of which are otherwise not represented in the playlist. I am far from a 1960s folk scholar, but I really like the Clancy Brothers -- my mom had their In Person At Carnegie Hall LP, so I heard that a lot growing up. I think I prefer "The Parting Glass" to "Restless Farewell," honestly, but knowing where the melody came from made me appreciate Bob's "version" more. I also kinda wish he had done "With God On Our Side" in the lighter, peppier way that the Clancys did "Patriot Game" -- but maybe Bob didn't want to be TOO obvious about it!
Enjoy -- less than two weeks left! :righton:

Not "punishment" at all -- couldn't be further from the truth. Putting it together was a bit of a chore, but LISTENING to it is pure joy.

    Perfect, well played.

I'm trying to do something similar at the moment, albeit in a slightly less exhaustive way with the material I have available to me (Studio albums, all Bootleg Series, Biograph).

  14. Sean, with the amount of effort you've already put in I seriously hope it all works out for you. Hell, if I had a time machine I'd hop in and offer you a ride back to 1964 myself. However, being realistic about this, I know for me personally I cannot forget what happened after. The purge would never work. For one thing I never bought Dylan in chronological order anyway so I heard Desire before Nashville Skyline. My Dylan universe is a little skewed to say the least. I applaud the idea and the time you've put in so good luck with the project. I don't think any of us who were born AFTER 1965 will ever TRULY understand the impact felt when Like A Rolling Stone hit the airwaves. When you're already conversant with Tangled Up In Blue and Idiot Wind, the blow out isn't quite as impactful.

I love Dylan, but listening for 12 hours a day repetitively? If its joy for you then that's the main thing I suppose.

Jesus, this is an amazing effort and a lot of trouble you have gone through. I hope you enjoy it! I have been doing similar, but in a much more relaxed kind of way. I didn't document anything. The way I am dealing with the wait is by revisiting all the bootleg series releases.

I am 33 so was not around for this when it actually happened the first time. I have been a huge Dylan fan since I was 16 though, and I assure you it is very possible to have our minds blown this time around. I was listening to BS 7 last weekend, and STILL had *HOLY CRAP* moments on some of the session material from HW61 and BoB...and I have heard all those a million times. I can still have nights spinning the mono masters vinyl where I am just in pure audio bliss. I have no doubt BS12 is going to be amazingly awesome. I sprung for the big set, and am looking forward to November with everybody else!

I hear you -- and of course, I don't expect to LITERALLY "forget" everything that came after 1964. It's not like I'm going to put Disc 1 of BS12 in my computer on November 6th and be like, "What the hell is THIS?!" But as someone who WAS born after 1965 (three years later, for me), I wanted to try this for fun -- not coincidentally, it's also a great way to distract me from thinking about BS12 every waking minute of every day from now until release day. I know I can't "un-know" the rock stuff, or Blood On The Tracks, or Infidels, or Oh Mercy, or Love & Theft; but I thought if I could just immerse myself in the folk years for a month or so before BS12 arrives, it will be like an extra breath of fresh air when I hear the 1965 voice and the band.

And you're totally right, us second gen fans will never know what it was like to have our minds blown like the first time "Like A Rolling Stone" was played on the radio -- and that's partially why I'm doing this. It's as close as I'll ever get. I also bought all my Dylan LPs out of order (first became a fan in 1984, so my first purchases were Empire Burlesque, Biograph and Knocked Out Loaded), so really this is the first time I've ever devoted any chunk of time to ONLY the folk period. It's been GREAT -- much better than I usually give the pre-rock period credit for.

Well, I'm working as I listen, so it's on in the background most of the time. Things pop up and surprise me every so often. The main thing is that I'm surrounded by the sound and feel of that period so that when I crack open the 18-CD set it will be a little more "new" to me than if I had been obsessively listening to 1965-66 stuff in the meantime.

And yeah, it's been a blast to listen to -- not a chore at all. I'm rediscovering dozens of songs and performances I hadn't paid any attention to in ages.

Just wanted to tell ya all that I just acquired the immortal 10 LP Ten Of Swords box set with the book yesterday. The box and records are in near mint. Some of the vinyl looks like it has never been played.

What a happy camper I am!
