Question for Bill Hicks fans

I recently acquired the "Bill Hicks Live" DVD, and was looking for material that Denis Leary had stolen and used for "No Cure For Cancer", but there wasn't much. Hicks talked about Jim Fixx and the suicide of heavy metal fans, but these weren't the "word for word" bits of stolen material I have heard about.

My question is where is this material available? From some of the CDs?

 

It is one his first CD Dangerous (1990).

Closer than the DVD, but still not the "word for word" example that I am looking for.

 

Leary didn't repeat it word for word.

 

He took the ideas and the patois and he amped them up. Bill Hicks was also very subtle. Leary not so much.

 

Yeah, pretty much. The point I was trying to make though is that Leary clearly stole the jokes but changed the wording a little. I couldn't believe it when I found out what he did.

 

I am going by this, which I found on Wikipedia:

Wikipedia can be, and often is inaccurate.

 

Yes, I know. But it is quoting a book, which isn't too difficult to do.

 

The quote could be wrong, or the book itself could be wrong...

 

Well, that is what I am trying to figure out.

 

Go buy a copy of the book and check.... As far as I know Leary didn't steal from Hicks word-for-word if that's what you're asking.

I admit my memory is not the best but I could have sworn I heard Bill do the NyQuil bit.

There was some stuff about cigarettes. I think it was the one about smoking so much he goes through two lighters a day.

 

It's kind of amazing that Leary had the balls to do it so blatantly. I mean we're not talking about stealing Bill's act for a comedy club show that only 300 people would ever see. He did it for a major cable TV special and album/home video release...

 

Bill's brother tells a story where they are driving in a car and Bill has his brother listen to No Cure For Cancer:

Bill Hicks: What do you think of this?
Steve Hicks: Kind of sounds like a sh*ttier version of you.
Bill Hicks: Exactly! (throws the tape out the window)

 

That sounds like the kind of cute little story that someone would make up to have a good story to tell. I'm not saying it didn't happen or couldn't have happened, but it doesn't sound like something Bill would have done (buy a tape just to dramatically throw it out a moving car's window).

It seems more likely that Bill would have decided not to buy the album (and thus not give his money to Leary) at all once he heard that Leary ripped him off.

But, who knows?
