IMWAN and Amazon UK are both listing a 9 disc cd/dvd set, REM at the BBC. Doesn't appear to be any additional information at this point. Due out on October 19th.

    Anybody else know anything?

I'm curious as well. This is a Universal (I.R.S./Capitol) product, that's more discs than the 5 albums that the band released on I.R.S.
How much time did they spend at the BBC?!

I would imagine they spent a lot of time at the BBC. I hear they were popular back in the day!

:) True enough, but 9 discs seems like a lot of stuff. Were they ever featured on ROCK GOES TO COLLEGE?

There must be multiple versions of some of the same songs, or a lot of covers, or multiple live shows in front of an audience.

It is, It's being released by Universal.

"Commercial Marketing" is the Amazon label listing for all reissue product from Universal. Universal owns Capitol/I.R.S. Records.

It will be spectacular if this upcoming set features copious amounts of live material from 1983-1987. :righton:

Oh wow - some of my all-time favorite live stuff is the radio broadcast from Nottingham in late '84. That entire show would be fantastic!

Hopefully it'll be cheaper than the R.E.M.T.V. set.

Currently listed at £78.99 or $100.48 U.S., but I'd bet the price will change closer to release date.

There is a Amazon U.S. link at the Imwan site as well, but the U.S. listing link currently has no page now.

I have some BBC recordings and they are very good. Can't get enough of this band so I hope this is a revelation.

I wonder if this could include post-IRS era material, given the number of discs.

Their last hits compilation (Part Lies etc) was a Warner release that covered both the IRS and Warner era. Maybe this release could be the reverse, a Universal release that covers both eras (?)

  13. I would have thought if it went past IRS years it would have come out on Concord.Hope I'm wrong as full career would be more interesting and with 9 discs there is plenty of room. There was a REM at BBC Tv special I recorded about 5 years ago and I'm sure it is still on my hard drive. Will have to have a look.

    Very cool. I'll buy it.

"Murmur" was a staple on my small town college radio show, and a soundtrack to many a summer night.

  15. Had a quick look through the 1 hour tv special REM At The BBC that was screened about 5 years ago.
Earliest performance was Old Grey Whistle Test from 84.Next after that was 89.So seems unlikely they would have enough stuff from IRS years to fill up 9 discs.Going on REMTV it is likely they have film of everything they performed whether it was screened or not(power of positive thinking).
Assuming a split of 6cds and 3dvds we could get 8 hours of audio and 6 hours of video(more positive thinking).
Hopefully details on REMhq very soon.Looks pricey although better value than Automatic box.

They appeared on Later with Jools Holland several times, including a one hour special.

There were also a few concerts broadcast on BBC radio. For example, from the 1995 tour.

Additionally their appearances at Glastonbury Festival were broadcast by the BBC

John Peel was not a fan of REM.
    Very seldom played them.

Most of this is post Bill, so I'll pass, still have the Nottingham on cassette and 84 OGWT on VHS
I wish channel 4 would release the Tube perfomances, REM at their peak.

Initially, I was surprised by the size of this since I didn't think they did that many shows (or at least full ones) at BBC. Especially 9 discs worth.
However, thinking further about it, I'd say they have enough to fill it with quality material. I wouldn't be surprised if we see 1-2 CDs of interviews though (a la the format of the Queen at BBC set).

For the later era material, I hope we see the Oct 1998 session in full as well as what was broadcast of St James Church 2004 and maybe even Hyde Park 2005.

    Some of the TV stuff is here: - no "Old Man Kensey" from Whistle Test mind;

BBC radio broadcasts, from distant memory... :
    1984 Nottingham
1991 (??) maybe someone like Nicky Campbell, studio session
The Milton Keynes show from the Monster tour was broadcast by the BBC I think

There's bound to be others, Glastonbury probably...

Half way through 'King Of Comedy' Stipe forgot the words and broke up laughing. Michael thanked Grant Lee Buffalo for dressing up in bear suits & dancing during 'Crush With Eyeliner' during the encore)
