Not even out of curiosity as a fan? Personally I don't want the depressing AIDS years. I haven't got over it in reality yet! I totally respect Brian and Roger not wanting to go through those times again. It wouldn't seem right if they did. It was incredible what Freddie and Queen did in those circumstances though.
I might end up seeing it years down the road out of curiosity, but I'll probably just spend the whole time irritated and picking it apart... lol
Considering this is Queen, and that campiness, bombast and a consistent aroma of cheese were always a part of the package (and they're in my like top-three bands) - I think this looks pretty good.
For what's worth I just watched this teaser trailer on my big screen. Most of which look good imo. There is no story synopsis, a lot BIG moves on and off stage by multiple characters (not just Freddie). People are mad then they hug, then mad, then hug. At this point, It's not the movies fault; it's a sizzle teaser to grab the attention. It's very ADHD. But that's our current normal. So a lot of words here only to say, I have no idea what this flick is about yet.
I think the Freddie Tribute concert, 'Made in Heaven' and 'No-one But You' were really good. 'Cosmos Rocks', Kerry Ellis, Adam Lambert - not so.
I'll be there for it as soon as I can. There will be a lot fans like us can pick apart. There already is in the trailer! I'll have to leave my cynicism at the door for this one...
Agree completely. But the Kerry Ellis thing is a Brian solo project, so perhaps you can replace it with the Pepsi commercial featuring Beyonce, Britney Spears, and Pink.
I think the best way to look at it is that first and foremost it's cinema entertainment for the masses. Spot on historical accuracy is a bonus, sure, but there's books and documentaries for that. I don't think I'd be particularly bothered if something isn't exactly how it was.
The trailer's only been up a few hours and already it's at the top of the trending page on YouTube. Trending - YouTube
I don't really like biopics of musicians/bands. I'll catch this on TV or from the library in a couple of years maybe.
I always have an incredible hard time watching biopics of musical legends. It's not that the films aren't any good, it's just that I feel musicians at such are not good subjects for dramatisation. When I have seen movies about Brian Jones, Jim Morrison, Ray Charles, Johnny Cash and so forth, I have always cringed. Something just feels wrong watching performers life's overtaken by actors. Maybe it's also because I find music documentaries more 'true' to the fore, I really don't know.
More fanboy nitpicking here... - The trailer makes out that Mary Austin (Freddie's long term girlfriend in the 70's) first laid eyes on him at a gig. Apparently they really met in London's Biba boutique, where Mary was a manager and Freddie was a customer - The bit where Freddie tells Brian 'here's where the operatic section comes in' was actually said in real life by Freddie to Roy Thomas Baker (the producer). - 'John Deacon's' shirt in the Live Aid clip is too pink. No wait it's not pink enough...
That first one bugs me. I'm not sure why they feel the need to glamorize everything in Hollywood. A nice little scene in a boutique would have worked just fine.
I respectfully disagree with your comment, but your avatar image makes it slightly humorous in an unintended fashion.
That jumped out at me too, and didn't Freddie say it after he played the first part of the song on a piano to Baker?
I don't mind the eyes. This movie looks friggin' awesome on all fronts. Some of those looks Rami gives looks just like Freddie, despite the eyes. The way he holds his mouth, the way he talks. I say let yourself be washed away by the film and see what happens.
This site here has a side-by-side video of Live Aid 1986 and the shooting the same scene from the film (you’ll have to scroll down a bit). Watch Freddie Mercury's Live Aid Performance Recreated by Rami Malek
They're doing the cliche "record company thinks something just isn't done but they do it anyway and it's a hit" thing right there in the trailer... Anybody tired of that trope?
That really happened when it came to Bohemian Rhapsody. When the band wanted to release it, executives said it was too long and wouldn't be a hit. That story is well known amoungst Queen fans - it's certainly been known since I got into the group back in the mid to late 80s. It's been talked about on documentaries and written about in books.
