The notion that Phil was the driving force behind "pop Genesis" is one of the most persistent myths out there.

If the other 2 hated pop music so much, why did Rutherford found Mike + the Mechanics? They were so bland they made solo Phil look like the frickin' Residents! :D

There is the Beatles and the Stones and then everyone else. Pink Floyd has gained a lot of ground on them in last 15 years though in terms of street cred.

I would rank U2 way above Queen and I don't consider either U2 or Queen in the the same class as the other 5.

Beatles is the only band on the list with more than one album that I enjoy listening to regularly.

Led Zeppelin is too much blues and sixties to be one of my favorite heavy bands. And the lead singer is too much of a soul singer and takes up to much space - a little like ..

Queen has this attention grabbing lead singer, who makes albums tiresome for me. They have all the tools needed to be the best band in the world, but the combination doesn't work in the long run. The musicians almost gets in the way of the songs.

    I don't like prog rock.

My favorite was always "Jazz" which will probably provoke still more cardiac events here.

The Beatles are brilliant (obviously) but are not "classic rock".

It's one of those funny double-meaning things. By classic I meant the literal definition, but it can be applied to the genre too.

I voted for the Beatles and the Who. But the Stones and the Who are virtually tied in my music world.

Those are my "Big Six" too, just swap positions of Beach Boys and Who.

Doors and Jefferson Airplane would complete my "Gr8" classic rock bands list.

Would have been interesting to see this poll by the age of voters. Is there perhaps a generation split at play?

Surely. People my age (I’m in my late teens) would have mentioned Beatles, Zeppelin, Stones, Floyd, Nirvana, Queen. Though we also should consider locations. What is popular in the US is not necessarily popular in Australia.

Was thinking about these 6 bands. Will different generations rate them differently?

Oh, sorry. Yeah, I think so. But the Beatles would be on the top anyway.

If you’re talking in regards to my post, no, I’m not my generation’s spokesperson either. But some things are pretty obvious, it’s no surprise, for instance, how big Nirvana is with younger audiences- Kurt Cobain is some kind of guru to teenagers.

Regarding these six bands, we’ve already discussed The Who, I would rather not discuss it again :agree:.

Maybe I was wrong though, perhaps Queen is today’s most appreciated rock band, for both musical & cultural reasons.

I was actually referring to @Goggen question regarding generational preferences.

Sometimes one changes his/her own taste with age too. For instance, when I was a teenager I used to listen to Queen, but I don't tolerate their music since I was about 20.

Yes, although, this forum is a bit of a bubble, to say the least, and there's a lot of anti-Queen sentiment on here, what with so many members being baby boomers from North America. Worldwide Queen is bigger than all those groups apart from The Beatles (data backs this up).

In the real world (meaning, outside the bubble of this forum), The Who are nowhere near as big as the others listed. They're not streamed anywhere near as much as Led Zeppelin, let alone Queen or The Beatles, nor were they as big outside of North America.

This forum really is a bubble too....
