And there's nothing wrong with "dad rock". We dads know best!

Absurd. Rock music didn't exist in 1963. It was Rock 'n' Roll, then pop/R&B, etc. Along with Bob Dylan, The Who and The Stones, The Beatles were one of the groups that invented ROCK in the mid-60s with albums like Revolver and The White Album.

    1. Zep by a fairly wide margin
    2. Stones
    3. Floyd
    4. Queen
    5. Beatles
    6. Who

Think a case could be made for the mighty Black Sabbath to be included.

I think The Rolling Stones have the most impressive catalog with the best staying power. I love the Beatles too but I rank them #3 behind Led Zeppelin.

Why do I feel like Queen should not be grouped with the rest of these bands?

IMO the forum got it right, even though I would have put Zeppelin over Floyd (today), I still say the results look pretty accurate … again imo.

It can't be absurd if you prove me right in the next sentence!! They were pop in '63, ''64, '65.... because there was no rock yet.

I don't mind if you think they're rock more than pop, but why exactly did you come out with "absurd" if you know there was no rock when they started?

Absurd; "wildly unreasonable, illogical, or inappropriate." Well thanks for that. Look, pal. I'm not saying the Beatles were dubstep or opera. Not sure why you're exaggerating so much with that word. Absurd? Really?

And, exqueeze me, I much prefer what I consider their "pop" era anyway. If you want to claim Help! is rock music, okay, but don't go crazy with the slurs. Boy, suppose you'll insult Ian MacDonald next. From Revolution in the Head:

As dazzling as the decade they dominated, The Beatles almost single-handedly created pop music as we know it.

Because artistically Queen's music is more highly developed, their sound is much more sophisticated and sonically they cannot be duplicated. They truly are in a class of their own.

I think this thread that is meant to determine “The Big Six of Rock”, so the poll should actually list 25 potential candidates, and allow for 6 votes from each voter.

That would be a better barometer to determine what the voters think.

This is inaccurate. The Rolling Stones have not once ever in their career advertised a tour as being a farewell tour. Not ever.

Oops... After checking it out (following some understandable outrage from other posters) I realized that my selective memory was thinking of the Who's 82 tour (which actually WAS billed as their last one).

I'm genuinely surprised the Stones are as high as they are. I figured Zeppelin would be easily second.

My point was The Beatles shouldn't be dismissed as merely "pop" from this poll because they weren't merely that. They helped invent Rock.

Queen & Floyd are the only ones I listen to with any regularity & even these, I pick & choose just the odd album. Here is how I'd rank them:

    1. Pink Floyd (five classic albums and some good stuff elsewhere)
    2. Queen (four classic albums & the odd decent single)
    3. Rolling Stones (truthfully, I'm basing this on a bunch of singles. I don't know their albums at all)
    4. Led Zeppelin (the acoustic stuff is listenable enough. Not relevant to this poll but the last few Robert plant solo albums have been amazing)
    5. The Who (Could probably fill a c60 cassette with decent stuff)
    6. The Beatles (I like three or four of their songs)

I realize am swimming against the tide with these opinions. :)

Be curious to see who you'd pick for an American list.

I reckon, for my taste, it would be a massive improvement on the above!

    1. Eagles (every album is just wonderful. Very few under par tracks)
    2. Lynyrd Skynyrd ( If it was a horse race, it would have been a photo finish. I'm one of the few who like the recent stuff as much as the classic)
    3. Allmans (A little too blues to break into the top two but still outstanding)
    4. Doobie Brothers ( Five classic albums, some good stuff thereafter)
    5. Little Feat ( I've got the Representing The Mambo album which is fab but I haven't heard anything else)
    6. Aerosmith (A tedious, karaoke version of the Stones)

For me the bigger surprise, is that Pink Floyd now has more votes than Led Zeppelin.

My two favorites are The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. I love pretty much everything by both of them.

All the others have some stuff I love and a bunch of stuff I don't care about.
