Is this the guy who used to play all the bars around Portland and Seattle in the early 80s? I think I saw him a few times. He was pretty good, and this is a great album.

Yes, this is the guy. The song "Complicated Now" on the Johnny & the Distractions LP made it to a couple of compilation tapes I made at the time...Great song...

The self titled debut and follow-up "Rhythm Method" from Boston based rockers "The Rings". Thankfully I have pristine vinyl of both.

Yeah, the album is loaded with good tracks like "Complicated Now".

I did pick up a cd in Portland recently titled "Johnny & The Distractions", which has a mix of songs from their first album and what may be needledrops of tracks off "Let It Rock". I purchased it at a music store, but can't tell if it was a formally authorized release or not. In any case, I'd love to see a full release of the A&M record.

Is this the one you found in Portland? It's on Burnside, a Portland label (they released the debut from Kelly Joe Phelps).
    http://www.amazon.com/My-Desire-Joh...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1265404675&sr=1-1

The following info is from an amazon review:

"The Distractions first released a brilliant, self produced, independent LP in the very early 80's that sold out of the local music stores as fast as they were put on the shelves. This led to they're record deal with A&M, resulting in "Let It Rock", a slicker re-recording of that first indy which, in the corporate studios, had lost some of its fire but sold moderately well. Johnny's attempt at national recognition & acceptance then led to his disbanding the Distractions and releasing a 'solo' album, produced by Al Kooper, with big production, horns and lackluster tunes... everything that the Distractions fanbase had previously admired Johnny's avoidance of.

This fan perception that Johnny had "sold out", along with the one creative critique that had always plagued Johnny... a vocal comparison to Bruce Springsteen, resulted in Johnny's fading from the spotlight.

These are not the original recordings. In the CD booklet, after a brief rundown of the D's history, Johnny tells us that, despite fan demand, A&M would not give permission to re-issue these vinyl albums on disc, but DID give permission to re-record the material. So, in 1989, Johnny reunited key Distraction members to put this CD together with material from the first 2 albums."

I had the original LP and bought the A&M release when it appeared and remember being disappointed. The passion from the original just wasn't there; I traded it for another copy of the original.
That's the one I want to see on CD, or maybe a nice vinyl re-issue An album called "Johnny and the Distractions" was apparently re-issued on vinyl by Tuff Boot, but I don't know if that's the A&M or the original LP, and anyway, they seem harder to find than the original.

Oh, the LP I really want to see issued on CD is "Fraser & DeBolt w/Ian Guenther". This was actually released by Fallout, but it was not only a very poor offering, it may have been illegitimate, according to Allan Fraser's daughter. I know Daisy DeBolt said that Columbia/Sony wanted too much $ to license the masters. I think the dodgy CD from Fallout may have been ripped from the soundfiles on the Fraser & DeBolt website.
The album is worth getting on vinyl. The cover of the Beatles' "Don't Let Me Down" is amazing. And the rest of the album is just as good.
