I definitely see what you're saying, and I do agree on one hand but on another then I think the song is far, far better than the majority of songs within the genre and I wouldn't be showing that enough if I didn't give it a 10/10. I weigh things up against the genre, not songs within the album or by the artist. For me that works best, but it's not a bad idea at all to do it your way
Truth is measuring things by rating them is very inaccurate so I think it's impossible to do it perfectly.

It's made to be enjoyed. People like to put things into categories for fun, and I find it enjoyable to do it for music.

I don't think so. That'd make a large portion of the population immature and childish.
Likewise with all media unfortunately, and in my opinion music is the most subjective of all. I agree that critics, people getting paid to 'review' things just shouldn't exist. It influences people far too much and strays people away from things they may really enjoy. But this is just another way of explaining to what extent you like something. It's basically saying you like something or not, but putting it into a more accurate measuring system instead of just saying "I like this song", "this song's okay" or "this song is amazing" and I don't think saying you like or dislike a work of art is immature or childish at all.

I remember as a kid hating this song and skipping it when listening to my old man's copy (probably my fault the record is scratched!), BUT now I'm older, I too recognise this track as a sublime piece of work — possibly my favourite Beatles George track.

Take a look at TV, “social media”, movies, newspapers, magazines … see what’s and how is written in electronic communication if whether in business or private correspondence. Consider the short attention span of people, their low or nonexistent mindfulness.

Well, not really, it wouldn’t suit most of them of course but I do like longer songs generally and I think Within You Without You is perfectly paced.

Not just this album, but this album may have been the first; if not the first, certainly the one that was most influential in establishing the idea of the album as product.

Many people have said that Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields should have been included on the album, and I can understand why they would say that, but i think it would have been a big mistake. Those songs would have dominated airplay. As it was, the radio stations gave a decent amount of airplay to nearly every song (except A Day In the Life, for reasons that I think are well known).

A word about ratings: I don't know what scheme others use, or even if they have a scheme, but my scheme is based on 5/10 being a pass mark. Less than 5 means I have a degree of dislike for it. A song that's a little bit annoying might get 4/10; one that I would consider skipping might get 2/10 or less. 10/10 does not necessarily mean faultless (although it could); it means closer to 10 than 9. When I am rating something and being semi-serious about it, I think a score out of 20 is about the right degree of granularity, but 10 usually suffices.

Giles' version of the album 4/10.

 

Getting Ringo to sing "Friends" was an inspired choice. It's not a fun song like Lucy; the singer is feeling a bit awkward and uncertain about whether he can perform well enough to impress the audience. Ringo's voice has that plaintive wistful quality that suits it perfectly.

I often think they should have let Ringo do more of the singing.

I think Friends is definitely a fun song. The lyrics aren’t all that melancholy to me. LSD to me though is quite a foreboding song. Interesting how people here things so drastically different, even when they both may have the same general ooinion on it.

 

I rate the album a 10/10 - it’s pure magic. But the sum is definitely greater than its parts
