I just had to post this Coca-Cola commercial with Ray Parker Jr. singing "Thirst Busters" (yes, a parody of his Ghostbusters song).

    Pure 80's cheese!

Please feel free to ignore Bill Cosby at the end, there...

How much of a cut did Huey Lewis get from this?

I think they gave him an old can of New Coke as a consolation. :)

...and please don't comment on it as discussion of his subsequent well-earned infamy will assuredly derail this thread.

Why don't they make those 3L bottles anymore?

Right, my first thought was - how long did they sell that one? I was alive at the time this commercial existed and I don't even remember a 3 liter bottle.

I believe grocery stores complained that they were hard to make space for on the shelves because of how tall the bottles were.

Darn it, I had the perfect one-liner ready, too.

To get back on track: I'd like to slap the engineer that jacked the "Thirst Busters" chant volume up so high in the mix.

Has Parker done anything good since "Ghostbusters"? A shame, he did some decent work with Raydio.

The chorus doesn't sound any higher in the mix than the verses to me.

Fair enough. It's an annoying mix across the entire commercial.

It's an old VHS dub that was probably recorded in mono to begin with. What do you expect? :)

I don't like things that don't sound good. :) I'm sure it was as equally annoying in '85 or '86.

    Dear Coca-Cola,

I was very annoyed with the poor mix and audio quality of your latest commercial....

    P.S- New Coke sucks!

Parker had a couple more minor hits post-"Ghost". One went top 15, 2 others went top 40.

I have no memory of those songs, and I suspect that #14 hit - "Jamie" - did so based on the momentum from "Ghostbusters".

I was a top-40 kinda guy back then, and I have no memory of this song at all:

Yeah I have no recollection of that either. Must have been a blip on the radar.

    This is what I remember:

Okay, so now I'm wondering if this came before the video for "Thriller" and partially inspired it..

"Jamie" received plenty of top 40 airplay where I lived at the time (Florida). However, I don't remember ever hearing his top 20 hit "I Still Can't Get Over Loving You" from 1984 until recently, when I made a point of listening to it after a guy in a record store told me that Tom Petty 'borrowed' some of the production for "Don't Come Around Here No More".

"The Other Woman" came out in the spring of 1982 so it was definitely earlier than "Thriller". Not sure if the video would have influenced MJ, since it apparently was rejected by MTV and received minimal exposure. Great song, though. Love the Stones-ish guitar riff!
