I do not if I am alone in this or not, but I cannot stand reality TV programs. I can count the number of episodes I have watched on one hand and have fingers left over. I you feel like I do is there anything that we can do to persuade the networks that this needs to change.

I am soooo bored with "Reality TV Shows". Just another sign of corporate culture with their hand on the money as opposed to the pulse of the nation.

I am in full agreement. I'm still reeling from the fact that there will be no more episodes of ED, but there seems to be no end to reality tv shows.

  4. ALP, you are NOT alone in your dislike for "reality TV". The fact that most of the shows use psychological profiles to get clashing personalities together in "real" situations is so far from reality that I could just scream. I do intentionally watch a few of these just so I can have somewhat of an informed opinion but this has proven to be one or two episodes of any of the various shows, I can't take more than that. I find myself sitting there, unable to empathize with the characters, angry they are in such a stupid situation by their own choice, and could care less what happens to them because in the end they will not be in any real danger, of anything, because this is not reality, it is TV. The characters are ALWAYS good looking, unless the "reality" is to impose the ugly upon the beautiful. They emphasize social class, and economic steroetypes as well as promoting segregation, based soley on those criteria. The situations are so unreal that nobody will ever find themselves in a similar one any time soon. The fake drama becomes almost opressive, and is not belivable because there is no real danger. Everything is staged, scripted, choreographed, and maybe even rehearsed, yet still presented as "reality". In the end I find myself uninterested in what they have to offer and truely don't care to watch the show at all. I know I am a bit odd compared to the regular, self important, self indulged, immediate gratification, entitlement mentality croud, but I'm not THAT far out in left field compared to most people I have met.

I've never watched any of these shows, but I do sort of like The Apprentice with Donald Trump. Maybe it's just because they show it on CNBC and I watch pretty much everything that's on CNBC.

"Let's put 15 dysfunctional human beings on an island and watch them stab each other in the back over $1,000,000" is not my idea of intellectual entertainment.

I don't know, any show that has this beauty parading aound in a bikini is alright by me! :D

I love Survivor too! Because of the nature of my work (I have to figure people out and their intentions real quick) I enjoy watching how people interact and try to get over on each other.

I'm very bored with sitcoms at this point....once Seinfeld went down... that was the last great one for me.

    TG for HBO and Showtime.

I have to admit I enjoy the "humiliation factor" in these shows. It is great when Simon rips apart the singers who think they're so talented on American Idol. As far as the performances themselves, I could care less. I also like when these "beauties" and "hunks" are exposed for how shallow they really are.

I loathe reality shows, the whole concept reeks of exploitation and cheap sensationalism. Never watched any of them, never will. Meanwhile Andy Richter gets cancelled, and who knows whether Arrested Development will survive, plus any number of other shows that I don't even watch, but I'm sure are better than even the best Reality Show. Ah well, the decline and fall of Western Civilization indeed.

It's ALL about the ratings guys! If people didn't watch these, they'd be off the air in a flash. It's not like some network exec decided that he'd rather watch Survivor than Andy Richter - the fact is, Survivor gets better (much better) ratings.

    American Idol is a gas!

It is amazing how some of these people actually think they have talent. Simon only speaks the truth.

I watch for the criticism not the actual singing (which this season has been largely horrible).

But if you want to talk about how low Reality TV is going....how about that Obnoxious Fiancee or the upcoming one about a dwarf trying to find love ala The Bachelor. Wow! It's like being at a car crash.

Just to start somethin' :D , how can you on one hand say that you "can't stand reality programs" while on the other boast about how few of them you've seen?

Not to single you out, but I'm already seeing on this thread the same sort of "elitist" b.s. that goes on in the music threads. Namely the whole "the TV shows (or music acts) that I watch and like are good, but the ones that I dislike are bad for society and are the ultimate doom of civilization."

Just like anything else, there are good shows and bad shows (my opinion of course). Of course you don't have to like them, but asking the networks to "change" is like telling the music biz to stop making music that kids like and want to buy...

Personally, after 50 years of sitcoms and formulaic drama shows, I find *some* of the reality shows quite entertaining. What's so wrong about being entertained by "real people" once in a while as opposed to actors reading scripted lines?

I *love* American Idol. Next to 24 and Alias, it's my favorite show on the air.

Yeah, I know it's all about the ratings, it's just depressing to me that these shows get the ratings that they do, thus perpetuating this type of programming. Well, each to his or her own. I just don't watch 'em, but they are taking up a lot of airtime.

(In my world) I would love to see a reality TV series like American Idol where music industry folks get to spin their finest CDs for a panel of Steve Hoffman, Gary, and Ed Bishop. I would thoroughly enjoy the "humiliation factor" of this type of show. I can envision certain remastering engineers running out of the "audition room" crying like little girls

O.K. Back to reality. However, I think it would make a fun internet spoof.

I don't watch them. Years ago I remember sitting in front of the TV doing a little channel surfing when I came upon that MTV reality show. I stared at this ludicrousness for a good fifteen minutes until I came to my senses and realized there were so many other activities I could be doing. Important activities.

I trimmed my toenails. Then I took a nap.
