Reconstructing Dylan's "Ten Of Swords" using OFFICIAL releases

I don't want this thread to turn into a discussion of the "Ten Of Swords" box set (I know forum rules prohibit that), but I am wondering whether any Dylan fans out there can advise me how to reconstruct that set using all the official "Bootleg Series" releases from CBS.

I have all of the "Bootleg Series" releases, plus "Biograph," and I'm wondering whether I can now assmble all of "Ten Of Swords" from those releases... I seem to recall that the box set featured some stuff that, to my knowledge, might still be unreleased, such as the Minnesota Hotel Tapes and the Gaslight Tapes. Or did the Gaslight Tapes get an official release from Starbucks or something like that?

The reason I ask is that I was blown away by "Ten Of Swords" when I first got a copy back in '86, but it's long gone now. And I'm guessing a LOT of the material on that set is released now, but scattered among a dozen of so albums that are sitting on my shelves.

  2. In 2005 10 tracks from the Gaslight were released on a Starbucks exclusive CD.
My boot has 17 tracks so depending on which ones were on "TEN OF SWORDS" you may not be able to get them from the official release.

Never did get "TEN OF SWORDS" myself, saw it once at a record convention in the late 80's and figured I'd take one more lap before committing to it.

Of course when I returned, determined to buy it, it was gone.

No, I don't think everything on Ten of Swords has been officially released yet.

Off the top of my head, the piano version of "She's Your Lover Now" and the East Orange, New Jersey story haven't.

Too much is still unreleased. Your best bet is to get:

    The Bootleg Series 1-3
No Direction Home (aka Bootleg Series 7)
The recent Witmark Demos (aka Bootleg Series 9)
    Biograph
The Gaslight cd released by Starbucks
The electric half of the "Royal Albert Hall" (Free Trade Hall) show on Bootleg Series 4
The Carnegie Hall promo cd that came out when No Direction Home was released

This pretty much scoops up everything from Ten of Swords that was officially released.

I have all those except for the Gaslight CD, but it sounds like there's still a lot of material I'd be missing that remains unreleased... I'm really enjoying the new "Witmark Demos" set, by the way.

I did this about 5 years ago. A fair amount of tracks on Ten of Swords ended up being released on Biograph and the Bootleg Series releases. However, you will need some Dylan boots to complete the job.

If anybody at Sony had real vision and imagination, they'd bootleg the bootleggers, and put out a 25th Anniversary release of this in 2011... With the book, box everything. Clean up any of the sources that haven't been re-issued and go for it. Make it a limited edition... Sell it only in real record stores.

It could never happen politically I guess. But if I were king that would be my first Dylan release, followed up by a complete Basement Tapes.

Did any of the Free Wheelin' tracks ever show up legit? Distincly remember that on a friends copy of the records, but dont remember if the first stereo copies of it had been discovered yet.

  16. Great work - thanks for your efforts!

I used to own the "Ten Of Swords" vinyl box, and fortunately took the time to needledrop stuff like the Minnesota Hotel Tapes material that couldn't be found anywhere else.

It was definitely a great comp for its time, but I've found that the sound quality has definitely been improved on all the official releases of this material since its issue.

Been looking for a CD copy of this amazing box set lately. Wasn't there also a 20 LP box set on colored vinyl of Dylan that came out a year or so after Ten Of Swords in the UK?

I used to work at a collectors record store out in Woodland Hills, California and I still remember the day that box set came out and it sold out within a week at a steep $65.00 or though back in the day!

It's certainly not on Columbia, but I'll leave it in the middle what you wanna call this grey area release. Either way it does fill in the gaps on the Gaslight Tapes (Sides 9-11)

"Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window" (song #117 [or is that #125?] on Ten of Swords) is on Biograph. Also, isn't "She's Your Lover Now" ( song #122) on Bootleg Series Vols 1-3?
