Hello all, Where are some good places in western or central pa that I can get my reel to reel deck repaired? I appreciate any suggestions!
I'd give Galaxie Electronics in Pittsburgh a shot. http://galaxieelectronics.com/ I've (thankfully) never had to take anything to get repaired, but a lot of people do and i've never heard anything but the positive. They're in the same building as Jerry's in Squirrel Hill. Oh, and if you do take it there, make sure to go up the alley on the side to haul your gear in, believe me, that's a lot easier than that long flight of steps up front!
Unfortunately galaxie is not taking reel to reel decks currently :/. It's an Otari MX 5050. F1nut, send me a message or post here who you would recommend. Thanks!
Definitely a deck very much worth having restored back to spec. Unfortunately I can't recommend anyone in your area but I do wish you luck with it.
Find a broadcast engineer with oldtimer experience. These folks saw a lot of older MX 5050 machines and know them.
Adrian ProAudio in Canoga Park, Ca, 818-347-9271 is a specialist for Otari MX5050 and Technics reel-to-reel decks. He totally rebuilt mine, and repaired two Otari decks for my friends. This is truly "The Man" for Otari.
Back to Adrian, in Los Angeles, he is such a craftsman and so proud of his work, that he flatly refuses to work on any reel-to-reel besides Otari and Technics Pro. He says that all other decks were made so cheaply that he could not stand behind his repair warrenty with enough confidence.
There's also a great place in suburban DC (VA) that refurbished a used Teac deck I bought to like-new specs. P M me if you want the specifics. Good luck!
I take it back, Adrian DOES also work on Tascam, Teac, aand Fostex. He just doesn't like them and does not recommend them, compared to Technics and Otari. (I guess nevermind that they are cheaper and more plentiful used). I have also seen Tandberg and Revox in there, but he says these are REAL nightmares. Adrian is an old fashion craftsman from Europe. He is REALLY not interested in spending time answering emails. I think he figures, if the customer is serious, he'll call or visit. (I'm guessing, I don't know him that well). Anything so casual as email, means the writer is just wasting time fishing for information. And Adrian is VERY busy as the only reel-to-reel specialist in Los Angeles/Hollywood... a capital of pop music studios. I saw Frank Sinatra Jr in there one day with one of HIS decks. Warren
Wow, sorry that Galaxie didn't pan out for you. One more place i can point you to, i was in Columbus, Ohio the other weekend and picked up some interconnects at a little shop there. Guy seemed really really nice and i saw a lot of vintage gear in the back room there. Here's a link, the place is called Stereo Lab Service: http://stereolabservice.com/ Wish you all the luck in getting it working again. It's been forever and a day since i heard a reel to reel, but man, SOOOO beautiful a sound they make. The only thing that stopped me from getting one was the lack of pre-recorded tape releases and that was 20+ years ago. Again, best of luck!
