Linda Ronstadt's 1981 album of standards she recorded with a small jazz combo, Keeping Out of Mischief. It was produced by Jerry Wexler, and it got as far as a final mix, a catalog number, and an album cover, but it was canceled.

From what I've read, she liked the songs, many of which she'd revisit during her sessions with Nelson Riddle, but she didn't like her performances. She was delighted that the label, after hearing the final product, decided to pull the album at the last minute.

    The exact wording:

"Mushroom Records regrets that a contractual dispute has made it necessary to complete this record without the cooperation or endorsement of the group Heart, who have expressly disclaimed artistic involvement in completing this record. We did not feel that a contractual dispute should prevent the public from hearing and enjoying these incredible tunes and recordings."

I would guess that Neil Young and Prince would own this thread!

Prince's "Black album" is one of the most striking example.
This album should have been released in 1987 or 1988. And just at the last minute, Prince decide to shelf it. It reached Graal status and finally was released in 1994, as a way for Prince to get rid of his Warner Bros contract.

Somewhere in the 90s or 00s, David Bowie decided that any new editions of his 1989 "Never let me down" album would be without the song "Too dizzy". Therefore this song is, in a way, forbidden by its author.

The Bee Gees recorded an album called A Kick In The Head Is Worth Eight In The Pants in 1972/73 but it was rejected by their label boss Robert Stigwood. It has never been officially released, and according to the Bee Gees, it never will!

I'm hoping that now Barry has renegotiated the licensing of the Bee Gees back catalogue, we might eventually see an official release!

One hopes - this album has become a lot of fans' favorite, especially if you like the early Seventies "ballad" era. But I see their opposition - "Life In A Tin Can" was a huge bomb, and they couldn't have sold a second LP in that exact same style.

Nope - well, okay, there's a bootleg of it, but the "album" seems to only amount to about seven songs, including a cover of the oft-mistaken-for-Ringo "I Can Help."

Ringo was bombed-out drunk through the sessions apparently, and wasn't too keen on people hearing it; the producer, if I remember, even wanted to release it behind Ringo's back (and was stopped in court).

I wonder how they'll release it, if they do. A separate CD or as a two-fer with LIATC?

If it ever happens, probably as a two-fer with LIATC. The first side of "Kick" seems to carry on the storyline from LIATC, anyway, so it makes sense.

The estates of Ham & Evans in 2015 had scheduled a release of two "PledgeMusic" projects:

The Dallas/Sail the Waterway single by Steely Dan was withdrawn very quickly and hasn't seen the light of day since.

Most of their earlier material will NEVER be released by them!
After hearing most of it, through the bowels of the internet, it's easy to hear why....
It's quite crappy, even by this Residents fans' standards.

    Prince - Black Album
The Beatles - Sessions (basically approved a decade later in expanded form as Anthology 1,2,3)
    Def Leppard - First Strike

  18. Jeff Lynne has repeatedly blocked the release of Beatles Forever, which is the only track preventing a long overdue reissue of Secret Messages with all songs from when this was originally conceived as a double album. He supposedly approved a proposal for a 30th anniversary 2CD Legacy Deluxe Edition that would have included everything from these sessions, only then it was shelved because of concerns such an archival project would affect sales of more recent projects he was selling to fans through a short-lived deal with Frontiers (since then, he's renegotiated a better contract via Sony's Columbia imprint, though the full Secret Messages remains elusive - officially, at least)...

Pink Floyd tried to hide "Vegetable Man" and "Scream Thy Last Scream" for quite a while because they thought it would make Syd look bad if they were released

Pfft - yeah, but Gilmour willingly let "If It's In You" end up on one of Syd's solo LP's, and a terrible take of it at that.

  23. Wow, so not a sticker, but actually printed on the album-cover. Yikes! Never knew that (and was only vaguely aware of the dispute in the first place.)

Actually bought a new promo copy the week of release (in 1971). It disappeared faster than a campaign promise.
