If ever a band could live up to the old chestnut 'better than The Beatles', surely it's The Bee Gees.

One of their best moments -the slower middle of Nights on Broadway. Genius!

I liked their late 60s/early 70s stuff quite a bit, but for some reason, even though I was never fond of disco when it was popular, I always thought the Bee Gees' disco stuff was excellent. The third disc of the "Brothers Gibb" box set is probably the best collection of their disco era ever put together. It's worth seeking this out (at least to me) just to get this one disc. It even has the wonderful live version of "Edge of the Universe". Great stuff as far as I'm concerned.

I've worked tirelessly over the years to compile the perfect early Bee Gees 'best of'. This is it!

You can clearly hear how rooted in funk it is on the live version from 1976. It starts at 41:58.

:) I'm sure it was in there at some point! just goes to show what an exceptional body of work they produced in those early years.

I think that's an impossible task! Lots of wonderful stuff on there but I'd have to include New York Mining Disaster, In My Own Time, Sir Geoffrey Saved The World, Lamplight & World. So many great songs. I think you're going to have to make it a double CD!

Don't get me wrong. Disco isn't a dirty word to me.
Just that when I listen to the Bee Gees from the mid to late 70s I think of R&B and funk because, well... that's what it is.

"Stayin' Alive" almost had a section like that too. I've heard it (they played it in a documentary)... it would've killed the song dead in that case.

They were so talented they switched to disco, like it or hate it, and dominated that segment at the same time they made they're little brother Andy a superstar, who however briefly, outshined they themselves. Not a huge fan but their music dominated my childhood. When I hear Stayin' Alive I'm still automatically transported back to the lunch hour wrestling tournaments we had at my elementary in the 70's. The memories music can trigger are a lot like a surreal dream sometimes. I have to thank these guys for that. They really were a big part of my formative years.

Love You Inside Out 1979 was considered futuristic for its starting instrumental with the cloudy vocals blended in.....

Prefer them from Main Course onwards, though you can hear them finding their groove a bit on Mr Natural.

After this, I liked pretty much every album. Especially Andy Gibb's.

Impossible task, but nice to see some deep cuts make the list instead of all the usual hits!

To me, the gorgeous title track to Horizontal has to make all comps of this era that I make.

If this thread keeps going on like this, the Bee Gees will end up with no disco songs at all. Which puts their fashion choices in a harsher perspective.
