This I'm confused about - radio IS playing women....he's saying to stop playing them because they're not enjoyed as much, but yet to get played he's saying to produce better records???

The article goes on to document the outrage of women singers who call him sexist, etc. instead of focusing on the issue at hand (ratings, statistics, math, etc.).

Martina McBride claims anger about the comments, yet admits she doesn't know how ratings work on radio:

I would love @BradOlson to chime in on this topic.

My wife probably listens to more female singers than male. I don't know if that's normal or not though.

I'm not sure what this means. It says that women prefer male artists, and we know that males prefer male artists. And while I'm not particularly fond of modern country--too many acts do sound the same--I imagine that rock audiences (whatever "rock" means these days) are even less fond of female artists.

This doesn't prove or crush anything. It's a historical analysis on women in country music. It doesn't even begin to touch on the issue here: according to this radio guy, if you remove women from the air, the ratings for a station go up.

Here's some alternate data that apparently refutes:

It doesn't really work hearing a woman sing about trucks, guns, god and gettin' down on the farm when a lot of the current content panders to suburban males working a desk job and driving a Corolla.

I see that all the time in different city's suburbs here in the Midwest all the time in OH, PA, IN, IL and KY. None of any real rural country folks act like that. These suburban "cowboys" wouldn't know rural life if it slammed them in the behind from an old Deere manufactured in 1977. It wouldn't take them but five minutes to get bored and start thinking about what they're going to do on their next booze cruise or trip to Gatlinburg.

You should see these guys too, folks. It's as if they've adapted some teenage identity thing. They don't smile in pictures anymore, like to stare at the ground a lot - guess it makes them think it makes them appear "humble and kick-yer-ace" - show a lot more chest by unbuttoning up top and their verbal responses come in four word sentences. Reminds me of being a little kid with some friends playing cops and robbers...except these guys are in their 40's or greater. And they all got the local FM country station on all the time playing the same stuff from the past three years, which the station must have a transmitter run on nuclear fuel - it can get through nine feet of concrete held together by rebar made of lead.

Can't have all that suburban tough guy fantasy and pandering coming from a woman.

You nailed it. I think a lot of country music stations are about selling a "lifestyle" to people who live normal lives and work normal jobs. I would compare it to the way automobile companies sell pick-up trucks to people who don't need to transport bales of hay or 4x4's to people who would hyperventilate if mountain mud ever grazed their Jeep. I guess in the end it's really harmless--and it helps keep the economy moving. And isn't advertising all about selling a "lifestyle?" Whether it's trucks, beer, deodorant or Cialis (those ridiculous commercials!) it's all the same. And now music....

This is a bunch of crap, IMO and many artists' opinions. We often have sets at 8:00 AM CT on M-F that end up generating 3 females back to back followed by 3 males back to back on WBJI. Many of my favorite country artists are female artists, the same with Contemporary Christian Music with Amy Grant, Nichole Nordeman, Sandi Patty, etc. being among my favorites, and in current pop, I love the music of Colbie Caillat, Taylor Swift, etc.

Check the numbers in this linked article. Pretty clear. Hill's argument is NOT data-driven and he is wrong. Nuff said!

Any artists, male or female, that have not had a hit record in the last 5 years are not really germane to this discussion. Mr. Hill is a radio consultant advising country radio stations right now - today - in 2015 - about what he thinks they should play. These stations have no interest in Tammy, Dolly, Loretta, Patsy or Kitty ..... or for that matter, Waylon, Johnny, Willie, Hank or Buck. Heck, I didn't even hear tributes or a single Johnny Cash record played on the radio in my city when he died. I don't expect to hear any Glen Campbell tributes when he leaves us. I guess they think it clashes too much with the new stuff. Even artists like Alan Jackson & Reba have trouble getting airplay at country radio these days.

Fact: Country radio is actively trying to get younger by playing music that will help them compete with younger-leaning formats. The major labels are on board with this - listen to all the hip hop influences. They are succeeding - the plan is working. It is now the #1 radio format in America - and often #1 in the precious 25-54 demo. There's no secret there - this has been fairly well-publicized. As for the female gender slant, well ..... I think that the difference is less than 5%. What it will be in 5 years time is anyone's guess.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not disrespecting those artists I mentioned one bit. I enjoy them - much more than I enjoy 95% of what is being played today. But this IS what is happening to country radio. It's the same reason why "Oldies" & "Smooth Jazz" formats are disappearing in market after market. Country radio is less interested in their older listeners. If they stick around, fine, it helps the overall demographic. Bust very, very few advertising buys are placed on 12+.

Radio & TV in general are not interested in someone of my age. And I feel fairly certain that if someone were to produce an age-composition graph of the folks on this wonderful forum, it would definitely slant to the right! (I wish someone would invent something that would automatically block all advertising if you're not in the target demo!)

The original oldies format is mostly on AM stations in rural areas, streaming online and satellite radio.
