Here's a photo of two copies of Tim Buckley's G&H. The one with catalog # EKS 7318 is the standard gatefold jacket (gold-ish Elektra label). And EKS-74028 has a Unipak jacket (tan Elektra label). But this still might not be conclusive. Anyone buy a Unipak upon or close to original release in the Summer of Love? :D

Just to add the discussion. According to discogs, the first US pressings were gatefold and the UK ones were unipack. Maybe that explains it?

P.S.: Sorry, it seems what I wrote is wrong. I think I had a wrong idea of what unipack was.

I know we are getting beyond the scope of the releases... but.. the Unipak patent was filed on Sept. 28, 1967. Would mass manufacturing have happened before the patent was filed? According to Google, the Buckley LP came out in August of 1967.

Also.. the Unipak jacket says the catalog # was "formerly EKS 7318" I'll bet the gatefold came out first. Then Elektra got a contract with Unipak / Shorepak and started redoing some gatefolds on the next press runs.

That's probably right. Makes sense. I thought the original was Unipak but seems unlikely now after reading this. The more I think about it I first remember first seeing them around 68- 69 for Waiting For The Sun etc.

It's a pretty hard album to find in mono actually.

There were two different style covers for Goodbye and Hello, the 2nd version being unipak style with a color photo inside. The first cover was a cardboard gatefold with a black and white photo inside.ive owned both versions for years. The later unipak issue was stereo only and given a rock 7000 series catalog number.. Both were issued with gold or brown Elektra record labels on the LPs.

I haven't played this album in decades. Not sure sure how I'd take to it now.

Right. Need to listen- I have the intuition that it might feel kind of pretentious to me now but hope I'm wrong.

  12. It's somewhat folky with more of a orchestrated theatrical push to it.
Not unlike Randy Newmans first album or Judy Collins' non folk Early work.

Does your EU pressing of GROOVIN' include the mini-poster? Not essential obviously but a nice little detail.

Might have to wait for Matthew Katz to die before anything like that shows up.

Eight times the color red explodes like heated blood...
Haven't thought of that record in a very very long time.

Anyone got the Gettin' Together compilation? Do you guys think it is worth it?

It seems like a good compilation of the era. They could have made a better cover, though.

  19. It's is a very favorite of mine. Guilty pleasure maybe? Perfect for the sumner of love and it makes me smile.

Why Jethro Tull? It didn't come out until 69?

They seem to be going for "feel" over chronological accuracy. I mean, the B-52s "Summer of Love" is part of this overall campaign, so....

I bought a copy. I like it. The sound is fine and the red vinyl is quiet & flat on mine. You're probably familiar with all or most of the tracks so it's up to you whether you think it's worth it. I like side 2 better than side 1. What surprised me was that most of the tracks are in stereo, especially since so many of these Summer of Love reissues were in mono. As for the cover, I agree with you. The pair of lovebirds was a bit of a stretch, theme-wise.

Thank you! Insteresting that all songs are in stereo. I'll probably get it soon with the Tim Buckley.

As for the others, I'll wait for more reviews to decide.

  25. The Dead is certainly one of the highlights in this series. Great sound butcagan, the cover should have been more San Francisco psychedelic centric. IMHO.
