Concerning Strange Feelin', the opening track on Tim Buckley's Happy Sad - I never realised, but should have, that...... "Strange Feelin", was directly inspired by Miles Davis' "All Blues" from Kind of Blue and the melody of the song is directly taken from the song." - info courtesy of Tim's Wiki discography.
The Otis Redding set in this series sounds really good. I also have the Rickie Lee Jones set and have no complaints about the sound. One to avoid is the Wilson Pickett set. I researched it, and listened to samples, and it appears to use fake stereo on a couple of the albums.
I bought the Chic and the Tim Buckley sets. The cover is, indeed, very ugly and the packaging could be better, but the sound of the CDs is really excellent! And the best thing is : they are really very, very cheap. Good value for little money. Highly recommended!
The Mary Poppins album is surprisingly great. It's too bad they didn't include Afro-Bossa, which was one of his best albums from that period. It's available, or was, from Collectors Choice.
I'm considering the following Original Albums sets: X Tom Waits Dream Theater The Rascals Cheap Trick (first set) Dr. John Rory Gallagher Warren Zevon Anyone know of any issues with sound or otherwise with any of these sets?
I have the J. Geils (a mix of original and remasters), Chicago (earlier masters from Chicago Records releases not the remasters). I think that we already have a thread on this.
just a reissue of previous albumS. the one I treasure here is IM IN LOVE hard to find in true stereo. the others are same as earlier issues including the weird but true stereo of WICKED PICKETT If you want mono get the box set !! Not the same price!!
I have A Man and A Half from 1992. Also a plus for the I'm In Love album: Bobby Womack (ever underrated by Jerry Wexler as a performer, not as a songwriter) plays lead guitar.
Picked up the MONTROSE set as well as the just released PRINCE set. The Price one is a random selection including; 1999 PURPLE RAIN PARADE LOVESEXY and DIAMONDS AND PEARLS
Original Album Series - Little Feat (5CD BOX) Little Feat / Sailin' Shoes / Dixie Chicken / Feats Don't Fail Me Now / The Last Record Album A poor review really put me off going anywhere near this box set, but after buying, and being very impressed with the Tom Waits, Tim Buckley & Duke Ellington box sets in the same series I just had to get a copy of the Little Feat and hear it for myself. Like the others I've heard in this series the sound is not a problem at all for me and probably as close to the original vinyl sound as anyone could reasonably wish for, more so when you consider the very attractive asking price. (currently £8.99 from Amazon UK) A great bargain - & the CDs are crankable too! Rhino/Warner didn't catch on to the error on the back of the Feats Don't Fail Me Now sleeve where the title track is incorrectly listed as Feets Don't Fail Me Now.
that particular poor review was written from a different perspective: why they never bothered to rerelease these following the release of the boxset Hotcakes and Outtakes containing bonus tracks and remastered (often perceived as better by some) sound....I happen to like a lot of the original redbook warner cd's (often done by Lee Herschberg).. In this case you get 5 great albums and 3 certified classics (although I also think that The Last Record Album is a classic YMMV)
I have the J Geils set, the 3 Lou Reed sets and just ordered the Dr John. Been happy with them all, so far. Nothing fancy, but the sound so far has been just fine.
Do not buy the boxset from Chicago, it's remastered. But Rickie Lee Jones and Little Feat are very nice sounding boxsets.
I've got the Bread box. Sounds good to me. They are the Rhino remasters from a few years back. Got it for 18 bucks.
I can thoroughly recommend the 'Paul Butterfield Blues Band' and the 'J.Geils Band' sets. Both feature the artists first five albums and the mastering is consistently good with the exception of J. Geils first album 'The J. Geils Band' which seems to feature a more recent (louder) mastering.
I'm listening to the Henry Mancini box set right now and it sounds great. I have several of these box sets. The Bobby Darin ones are nice as well.
The Harry Nilsson one's the best value. Most of the bonus tracks are different to the previous one's released here. The Sly Stone one's amazing value as well. I want that Mancini one RIGHT NOW!!!
I love the Shuggie Otis one. I have the Colin Blunstone Original Album Classics too, but the sound isn't very good.
Curse you, Tribor, for showing that Mancini set!!! I've been wanting that Mr. Lucky for a few months now after I heard it playing in a music store a while back. So with the 5-CD set purchase, I got it plus 4 other albums for only about $2 more than I would have paid for the single CD (with a few dollar credit I had with the online vendor and sale price).
