Wow, more atonal and more Hendrixy than I've heard from him. Nice!

Richard Thompson is absolutely the most underrated guitarist today. He is a huge talent and I think even with all the attention he gets he doesn't get nearly enough recognition as a major heavyweight in guitar's history. As a guitarist, he is easily among the best.

He is outstanding. Nobody else plays the way he does. Pure sophistication and musical depth, not just guitar wankery.

"Underrated" is the understatement of the century-- RT has a legitimate claim on the title of Best Guitarist Ever. Seems almost unfair that he's a top-tier songwriter as well.

The new ACOUSTIC CLASSICS is amazing, BTW, with several RT-has-three-hands guitar work goin' on. Great songs given great solo acoustic performances in the studio. Recommended.

Interesting you should mention Hendrix. I heard Richard Thompson's Electric tour here in Birmingham and was amazed at how much the vibe he created was similar to Hendrix. I think it's the closest I'll ever come to hearing Hendrix live. RT really is an amazing guitarist who should be far better known.

I've been fortunate to catch the Electric Trio twice--two of the best performances and some of the greatest guitar work I've seen and heard in a long lifetime of concert-going.

That made my day better--thanks for sharing. Everything about that performance is exceptional: the solo, Richard's vocal, the harmonies, etc.

Outside of Jeff Beck, there is no other guitarist from the 1960s-70s who is continually improving and pushing himself to new heights. Great stuff! Arnie

I remember thinking — around 1985 or so — that if RT had been a long-haired rock-star lookalike, he'd have blown Eddie Van Halen outta the water as the most distinctive guitarist of the era. At the time, I think he used the same Stratocaster throughout his concerts, regardless of what tuning he was playing in, and had one pedal, and it was for volume. Everything else came from his brain via his fingertips ... and, as we all know, his playing can be scary.

Jumping on board the RT accolade train with "Drowned Dog, Black Night" from the first French, Frith, Kaiser, and Thompson album (not a live version, unfortunately). The first guitar solo is RT, the second Henry Kaiser:

As someone who just picked up the new album Acoustic Classics, wondering if it was worth my time since we've all heard the songs so many times, thanks for this thread. And yes, I guess this thread is to celebrate his electric work... but still.
