I remember reading that viewers tended to have an affection for Fawlty Towers characters in inverse proportion to their competence; therefore Manuel was the most loved character, and Sybil the least.

Farewell to a most beloved man. I just realized that I often quote Manuel to people (who are aware of the show and will get it) almost as much as I quote any Python character. Andrew Sachs was certainly the most effective comic presence on the show after John Cleese, probably more so at times because there wasn't a "squirm" factor with Manuel!

    R.I.P.

    RIP Andrew.

I remember hearing him in an interview a few years ago where he said he felt strange that his career was so overwhelmingly defined by something that was really "just 4 weeks work" thorughout his life, making those 12 great episodes.

In recent years he also spent a fair amount longer than that on our screens as Ramsey in Coronation Street.

He was also of course an unwilling and innocoent participant in one of the biggest scandals to hit the BBC in recent years, one which had big ramifications on some of its biggest stars, including Jonathan Ross, Chris Evans and Terry Wogan.
