Sad news. Love his 1950s stuff, not so much what he did in later years.

Wow, so sad. RIP Chuck. Hard to imagine how pop music would have turned out without you.

I only have one Chuck Berry story.

Back in the 80s, I was with Jan & Dean in Reno at a Rock & Roll revival called Rockin' The Night Away. We were in Jan & Deans trailer when Chuck showed up for his set, about 5 minutes before it was supposed to start.

He had no band, just a young girl with him. It took about two minutes to put together a band as besides J&D, there were lots of old bands playing, including the Ventures. So he grabbed who he could and the set went off without a hitch.

I guess any pro musician worth his salt can play Chuck Berry songs in his sleep.

He's probably yelling at some hapless pickup band in God's roadhouse bar right now; poor bastids. ;)

No Chuck = no rock'n'roll as we know it.

    RIP

Thank you for everything, Mr. Berry. Hail Hail Rock & Roll!

As John Lennon would probably say, Rock & Roll has died.

I caught him in Sheffield, England back in 1994 and that one show contains two of my favorite concert memories to this date. Somehow I've managed not to lose the program from that tour, so I think I'll be thumbing through it soon.

Most here know better than I do that he worked with pick-up bands in different cities (or at least it's my understanding that he did at that time). We lucked out that the band that night was a crack outfit. Berry seemed to agree because at one point, during a slower groove, he paused while the band played on and turned around, rhythmically nodding his approval for a nice stretch. He pulled out a handkerchief to wipe his brow then sat near the drum riser and smiled while listening. All this lasted maybe a minute or two.

The other favorite moment was during "Johnny B. Goode," at which point he invited all the children in the audience to join him on stage to duck walk. It was such a genial moment (and one common later in his career) and right now, some eighteen years later, I wonder how many of those kids, now older than I was then, will wake up in a few hours with that same memory but with a view from the stage.

I new it when I just heard Q104.3 play two of his songs. I'm like 'oh boy, he must have just passed. They (sadly) never play his music.'

As old as he was it's still kind of hard to believe. Beethoven is rolling over!

Not just the guy who put the teenage bounce and Detroit V-8 into R&B and made it rock, but a great American poet.

    For example:

They furnished off an apartment with
    A two room Roebuck sale
    The coolerator was crammed with
    TV dinners and ginger ale

But when Pierre found work, the little money comin' worked out well
"C'est la vie", say the old folks
It goes to show you never can tell

They had a hi-fi phono, boy
    Did they let it blast
    Seven hundred little records,
    All rock, rhythm and jazz
But when the sun went down
The rapid tempo of the music fell

"C'est la vie", say the old folks
It goes to show you never can tell

They bought a souped-up jitney, 'twas a cherry red '53
They drove it down New Orleans
    To celebrate their anniversary
It was there that Pierre was married to the lovely madamoiselle
"C'est la vie", say the old folks
It goes to show you never can tell...

I am saddened by the passing of Chuck Berry, but I take comfort knowing he lived a full life.
