Karen Fontana has confirmed that he died tonight.
One of the great greats, what a life he had !
RIP Mr Fontana
Hound Dog was the record that started it all for me when I was a kid. I remember watching that label go 'round and round while I stood there transfixed.
Rat-a Tat-Tata Tat-Tata Tat-Tata Ta BOOM! That was IT, I was going to be a musician, and I am. I've met many wonderful people, and had and still have, a great time playing.
Thanks DJ, and RIP old friend.
Very sad news. I have always thought of the drums on Hound Dog as making it the first real rock record.
His drumming on those Elvis sides is unsurpassed IMO. A Big Hunk O'Love is one fantastic rocking record, the hardest Presley ever rocked!
R.I.P DJ Fontana
OH hell! terrible to hear this. One of the greats. Good run at 87.
Forever remembered in the history books and the music.
One of the greats, not many drummers who could swing a rock song like he did.
Absolutely, Torch. Those drums are so B-I-G sounding. DJ is the drummer I think of when I think of Elvis. As good as Buddy Harmon, Ronnie Tutt and Larrie London are, they didn't have that "Playing behind a stripper" kind of feel that DJ had. It was just tight enough to hold it together yet loose enough to make you feel it could go off the rails at any moment.
D. J. Fontana RIP +
Thank you Sir for everything.
Great drummer in the greatest band.
Wow. that is all i can type right now. he was the first drummer. in a way, right?..i didn't have any idea or thought that he could still be alive. How I take stuff for granted. He was the one on the drums with Elvis. Nothing more needs to be said. He played on so many sides and with many artists. What a tremendous gift and joy he gave to us. You will be remembered as long as there is rock n roll.
1st drummer, like rock n roll, just to clarify...but then there's earl palmer, etc......
R.I.P. Mr Fontana.
DJ Fontana dead at 87 - Elvis Presley's legendary drummer and last surviving band member passes away, his son reveals
The last member of that legendary, earth-shattering, genre-defining foursome has left us. 87 is a good ride for anyone. Boy, did he make his ride count.
Rest easy, sir. Say hello to Scotty, Elvis, and Bill for us.
I am sure y'all are ripping it up as we speak!
RIP D.J., you are definitely a legend and will be missed on this Earth, but you have left a great legacy we will still enjoy for years to come.
D.J. Fontana, Elvis Presley's drummer, dead at 87
R.I.P. Spent a lot of hours listening to his playing.
Very sad news. RIP
Oh Damn another one of the greats has now departed.
R.I.P DJ and thank you!
Got to meet him in 2006 in Memphis at the Ponderosa Stomp. Here he is with Deke Dickerson and Sonny Burgess:
