One sweet Lady has passed on. I imagine that she and Paul woke up in heaven and said "Hey what are you doing here? Let's start a band" and no sooner then said Spencer was there joining in!" Heartfelt thoughts to all their family and loved ones.

    Jorma Kaukonen:

We were just checking into the hotel in Santa Monica this afternoon… I’ve got a solo gig at McCabe's Music Shop tonight… I got a call from Grace who told me that Signe, the Airplane’s first female voice, passed on the same day as Paul.

Signe was one of the strongest people I have ever met. She was our den mother in the early days of the Airplane… a voice of reason on more occasions than one… an important member of our dysfunctional little family. I always looked forward to seeing her when we played the Aladdin in Portland. She never complained and was always a joy.

Flights of angels sing thee to thy rest sister…

You will always live in my heart…

    Now we are four…

Same day as Kantner? A genuinely spooky coincidence.

Sad news. I enjoyed her vocals on the first Jefferson Airplane album, though they were very different from Grace Slick's singing later on.

As was said elsewhere the artists from the 1960s are leaving us now. They generally are/were a bit older than me, but it isn't a good sign... :sigh:

I loved Signe's work. She was a woman of great conviction and had the courage to quit the band for the sake of her family. I mourn her passing and am listening to her farewell concert right now....

A lot of the younger folk may not know her, but she had a damn fine voice, as evidenced on the 1st JA album. If she would have/could have stayed, the band would have done just fine. RIP.

Enough with the Airplane, universe! Dang, I'm sad. R.I.P. Signe. You sure helped the Airplane take off and soar.

Sad as it is, it's only that we are familiar with so many of artists that each death has some impact. It's gonna get worse.

I have to say that there's so many great songs that came from the Signe lineup of the band - particularly the live versions.

    Other Side Of This Life
    Bringing Me Down
    Come Up The Years
    Run Around
    Don't Slip Away
    Runnin' Round This World
    It's No Secret
    Go To Her
    High Flying Bird

Gonna make me a comp rounded out with a couple more songs. There is an innocent wide-eyed worldview on this material - an overall vibe that is gone by the 3rd album.

Kantner is underrated as a writer and player in many respects. And Marty Balin is probably the most underrated singer of the Rock era.

DAMN! What a horrible week for Airplane/Starship fans :( This is unbelievably sad for me. I have followed the group/s since I was 13 years old and love just about everything . Jefferson Airplane Takes Off was a great album and Signe was a big part of that.
Jefferson Starship said on FB they plan to continue carrying the flame but I don't see how they can because now David Freiberg is their only connection to late era Airplane and early Starship. Donnie Baldwin is onboard but he joined in 1982 well into the Mickey Era. Can they even be allowed to use the name? The way I understand it Paul had leased the name for his lifetime but post-PK I don't know if they can legally be the Jefferson Starship. It may come down to where all we fans have are Jorma and Jack and of course Marty's low key solo career and Starship Featuring Mickey Thomas......That may well be the last "starship" aloft.

  21. Doesn't the Duke Ellington Band or the like still tour ?

No knock on Grace, but I wish we'd heard more from Signe. What a voice!

I was thinking about her the other day, when I heard Kantner had passed.

Were her first names pronounced Seen-yay Toe-lee?
