Of course, in the "teachers/firemen/police/military are underpaid" sense, it's unfair.

But if a TV show generates $100 million/year partly due to my work, should I get paid $50,000 for my efforts because that's "fair"? That seems distinctly unfair to me...

There are a lot of perfectly friendly people who don't enjoy shaking hands. Greg Hawkes of The Cars doesn't, preferring the Hindu namaste gesture of clasping both of his hands together. Really nice guy, just not into shaking hands with people. It can strike some people wrong, but it makes a lot of sense, especially if you meet dozens or even hundreds of people at a time.

I try to grade these things on a curve. Is he arrogant by the standards of your average dude from LA? Sure. But by the standards of being the 5th Baron Haden-Guest and member of the British House of Lords, he's incredibly easy-going.

Spinal Tap is just the great movie. Who cares about the rest it's irrelevant?

I'm just basing it on interviews I've seen. Watch his interview with Kevin Pollack for an example.

As I explained in my post, yes I understand this because of what a show makes but as a rational, fair human I do think it is wrong based on what other people earn. Yes, great the show generated 100 million off of your work (and many other folks work tied to the show) but in the scheme of the bigger world I just do not think it is fair. So again, I do understand why but a part of me doesn't agree with it.

Look up the actress, Jennifer Tilly. She was married to the Simpson's Sam Simon. Her divorce settlement was 80 mil.

  11. I think what you're getting at is the actors or musicians are figureheads for a lot of people who work on successful media projects. Who's to say they are REALLY more important than writers, editors, etc.? That said, in the case of Spinal Tap, those guys wrote the movie, too, and they therefore deserved a huge payday, both in terms of performance and intellectual property.

I will say that the idea that it's unfair that some people earn more than other people seems irrational in itself (to me).

I agree! They already made their statement with the first movie. No sense in beating that idea into the ground. Let it be.

There are a lot of people out there who work very hard and do not get paid very well. All walks of life. The few super successful people seems to get most of the money out there. I think they are paid too much in comparison to the rest of the people who work. I think the balance is why out of whack. Would I turn the money down? Most likely not but I am sad to say that. Instead of ten million maybe I would be okay with half that. Whatever, back to our scheduled program........ :)

Seriously. They risk becoming the very thing they're lampooning.

Yes, but the whole idea of rock stars in their sixties and seventies still on stage needs to be lampooned, and seeing this fictional band trying to do the same thing they were doing in their youth? That, my friend, is comedy gold!

I know this is a touchy subject for the average Hoffman Forumite, who enjoys music by rock stars well past their "sell by" date.

I would LOVE to see a third Spinal Tap movie - an official end to the franchise (which always seems to be in a perpetual state of "we MIGHT do something else with these characters") where they face becoming mid-seventies rock stars past their prime.

Wow, even faux rock superstars have ego issues that prevent proper reunion tours. Actually, it's kind of perfect.

or Maybe the "average Hoffman forumite" is not ageist . . . seniors have aright to make a living without discrimination. They also have something to say that just may be worth listening to. Sadly, much of society does not think so and marginalizes them. It's all about target demmographics and being young and hip. Sad really. All voices have a right to speak.

Is it "ageist" for a fat, graying, balding, Viagra-popping 55 year old to say that his fellow fat, graying, balding, Viagra-popping 55 year olds look ridiculous in Spandex?

Don't give Kevin Hart's agent any more ideas.
He's already been in 37 movies this year alone.

Of course, I'm quite certain that Tap would now be an all-female band
and Hart would just play the equivalent of the Jeanine character.

I dont care about that. You made fun of 'forumites' who listen to music made by senior citizens, as if both the act of music-making and music-consumption was something to make fun of. It is a process of 'othering' that is discriminatory.
