He really seemed genuine and a nice guy when I spent that time with him. He loved Mr. S.

One of his lesser known works, but this was indeed him:

I had this album (with the San Sebastián Strings) back in the 70's and it was a favourite of my girlfriend's at the time....in a big way.... It was once referred to vinyl pantie remover....if she had an affinity for Leonard Cohen...well, who's to say where it would have led us?...

He was ubiquitous for a good while, I certainly remember his 8 tracks and books at my house when I was a kid. I even used to read two of his books when I was starting to write poetry. Where are those books now...

I have a few of his albums, the Warner Brothers stuff is like artwork, WB was the perfect label for him. I have the The Sky, The Sea and The Earth LP's and I have a 1974 set called The Seasons with the San Sebastian Strings and Anita Kerr. He was a very interesting guy, one of a kind.

Still looking for this 4 LP set. I found one last year but there was a pressing error with two of the sides appearing twice and two others left out. His collaborations with her were nice, especially in the 70's when her music took on a bit of CTI funk influence.

Those who travel gentle in the world are seldom
recognized as gentlemen by others. They go their
own way hopefully secure within themselves
that what they do is honest. Never must the world
be judge or jury. The payment rests with God.

The verdict known to those men only and carried in
their private pockets. If we must judge, let us use the
mirror on our own wall first for practice.

Perspective has its problems, but all a man need do
is look into a stranger's or a friend's good eyes to see
the sunset's truest color. Better than a crystal ball or
    the most advanced kaleidoscope.

While I was looking for just that poem, I came across this intriguing entry.

BTW if you haven't heard Nina Simone's version of A Single Man, you're missing out!

Here's one of the more oddball tracks from McKuen. The 8-track had a notice to the customer that it didn't sound this way because of tape flaws.

That pretty much sounds like a early '70s Warner Brothers 8 track, the only thing missing is the rattle :)

A very talented man. RIP. But I have to admit that the first thing I thought of when I saw the news was the Credibility Gap's "In Someone's Sneakers" song

I'm with Guy (just realized he posted this first, and so I rushed back to edit this!). For me, this is his most enduring work, given its connection w/ my childhood. I believe it earned him an Oscar nomination.

Goodbye Rod and thanks for your thought provoking poems, that often worked just as well as lyrics to a song. If you had only written this one, I'd still feel that your words had touched my soul ...

My first exposure to Rod McKuen was on a four track PlayTape in the mid-60's. back then I just wanted to play my Beatles PlayTapes but now and then I would put that one on just to sound smart in front of my friends.
