And let me say, even on the seond page--this is an awesome idea for a thread. I've got 29 of 'em, by the way, although I haven't really listened to some of them (got 'em on Amazon's $5 download sales; those tend to sit on my iPod for a while).

The best thing was when Stereogum was reporting on all the best-of-decade lists (which was really great for Stereogum to have done), and some too-smart-by-half commenters were speculating on what Rolling Stone's list would look like, that it would be all U2 and Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. That's funny (RS has kind of earned getting ribbed on Bob-Bruce-Bono worship over the years), but it was funnier when the actual list came out and it was nothing like that.

I don't have any of them, but I'm sure they're all good. Have fun!

So this is one of 9 albums on the list that I feel I can contribute/comment on (feeling that if I don't own it I should hold my peace for others who know more). Anyways, I own only two Cohen albums, Songs of and this one. This is an excellent but not great album and having two albums that are some 40 years apart makes nice listening bookends.

I really enjoyed, like many others the last thread and look forward to following this thread.

    Thanks

"Sky Blue Sky" is a great album! "Impossible Germany" is beautiful. I like Wilco a lot.

("Dear Heather" was a BIG disappointment after "Ten New Songs". Some kinda weird spoken word things on there and stuff. Not my bag.)

Thanks for taking us on this journey again. I don't have the first Hold Steady -- three others, I think. The Quentin Tarantino comparison is right on. I do like the band in bits, not whole albums.

I never got into Return to Cookie Mountain. I'll have to try it again. I do like Dear Science.

Sky Blue Sky I listen to a lot.

I have 55 of the albums on the list.

Love to see another listening thread here, after having read through all of the other one. I actually own 95 of these albums (might as well pick up the other 5, right?), so I'll be listening along when a new album post comes down the pike. Thanks for doing this, Mike B, we're in for a somewhat-bumpy ride...:righton:

Mike, would you be able to post the list here in the thread? For some reason that website absolutely hates me.

Yes, I wanted to thank MikeB! Thank you, thank you! I followed your "big list" as a lurker. Good times.

I only own (me and my husband that is) about 1/4th of the list, but am familiar with most of it. I am chuffed to see that one of my absolute favorite albums ever is on the list, brilliant. I could name several albums that are more deserving to be on the list as well, but that isn't the point is it?

U2's NLOTH is at #36? The credibility points from Rolling Stone dropped a few after seeing that (and I'm a U2 fan - I think it's a mediocre album at best).

I actually own quite a few of these, but I haven't done a tally. Really nothing unexpected in here, so far.... seems pretty much what I would expect from RS. But kudos to the OP for posting, always worth a few minutes to check out.

EDIT: I have 51 of these albums, I believe - just eye-balled the list. And some of others are definitely familiar. That doesn't mean I agree with them, however - my list would likely be very different than theirs. But that's to be expected.

I'm sure some googling could give you what you're looking for but I actually don't want to see the whole list myself. I'm going 10 albums at a time because that's how their site lays it out and it's the right number of albums to look at to make sure I have or can acquire them for when I'm ready to listen. I like not knowing exactly what's coming up down the line (though like all of you I'm sure I can guess about half of them).

That's funny... especially as I personally don't think Bruce/Dylan/U2 put out great records this century. I mean I don't remember exactly when Love & Theft came out, but that's Dylan's last great one... U2's last really good one IMO was the one with Beautiful Day and I also think that was around turn of the century... and Bruce? eh, I never got into anything post-Tunnel.

I have 21. The only one in the list I should have is the PJ Harvey. No rap, hip-hop, dance. No Bruce or U2 or Radiohead. No girl singer-songwriter/loungue lizards. No Shins or TV on the Radio. It's a miracle I got as high as 21! Pretty lame list.

It seems that Sky Blue Sky got pegged early on as the Wilco album for people that "couldn't handle", or didn't "get", Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, or thought it was too "experimental". One of my musician friends called SBS "dad rock". (sorry for excesive " " -ing in this paragraph)

I don't agree with that at all....I like them both. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is great, and, yesy, so is Sky Blue Sky. It's like, hey, I can't like With the Beatles AND Sgt. Pepper? So they're different...it's not a crime.

That's a good point-the truly great bands put out albums that don't necessarily mirrior the others in their catalog.

Sky Blue Sky definitely did not grab me at first but later clicked with me. To me it has that great 70's album rock sound/composition.

Looking forward to Mike B's reviews. The last thread was great.

Well, one thing I can say, comparing Dylan to Cohen, Cohen is a lot more expensive to see, but tries to be worth the price of admission. His was an amazing concert!

I've got 24 of the ones listed, but this Wilco album is sadly not one of them. I was really into them right before SBS but for some reason, I felt a bit burnt out when this one came out and I never bought this or any of the others that followed. But, I've had a bit of a Wilco resurgence as of late and plan on filling the holes in my collection by the time the new one comes out.

Not too bad of a list. I would have liked to see more Ryan Adams.

erm, in the top 25 there are two Springsteen, two Dylan, and a U2 album.

To the OP, you are not actually purchasing all these albums blindly are you? I think it is a valiant effort, but I would advise finding a 'best of' list of music from the last decade from a more knowledgeable/reliable source. This list misses some great music. If not, for starters I hope you really like Kanye West!

I have 39 of these plus individual tracks from approx. 20 others.

As I'm not a fan of Kanye West, Radiohead or Coldplay, I seem to have instantly excluded myself from at least 10 on that list. That these artists occupy 10% of the places seems very strange.

Nice to see The New Pornographers represented in there but surprised not to see Neko Case make a solo appearance, and I do think either Separation Sunday or Boys & Girls in America should have appeared, rather than the Hold Steady's debut.

The singer is the one that's holding me back from loving this group...I dig the rhythms, the sounds, the experimental yet accessible vibe. It also doesn't hurt that Bowie endorsed them. But those vocals can really grate at times.

I love Sky Blue Sky and it would be a hell of a lot higher than 97th on my list, that's for sure. I've never understood the boring criticism. Good songs, good playing. If that makes it Dad rock, so be it. Best band in the world IMO.
