    Hello,

I have recently traded for a copy of "Get what you need", Mickboy's version of the Rolling Stones "Le it bleed". I traded for it basically because I was interested in the bonus tracks, but the guy really got it. This cd sounds so much better than my vinyl version. I wonder how Mickboy does his remasters. To me it doesn't sound like a needle-drop... For example Dr. Ebbetts Beatles needle-drops don't compare to this cd. Does anybody know more about the Mickboy remasters and how they compare to the official remasters?
By the way I'm not a Stones afficcionado, but LIB (no, not Let it be...) is a great record and this version really rocks.

I would say the difference between Dr. Ebbetts and Mickboy is that the Dr. seeks to replicate the sound of his vinyl source, while Mickboy sought to improve the sound, even if it doesn't sound like his original source after he's done. He also uses bonus tracks and different titles and artwork than the original LP's, unlike Dr. Ebbetts.

  3. Mickboy titles are needledrops, and then he "sweetens" the audio with EQ and who knows what else. Whether they sound better or worse than the original is a matter of opinion, what's fact is that they sound nothing like the original.

    Take care,
    Brett

I bet he uses the correct mix of "Ruby Tuesday" though :D

Sorry, I just had to let that out - I'm still not over that.

Well said, my sentiments exactly. Try the original W. German London/PolyGram catalog #820 052-2 RH pressing for the best sounding LIB available. All IMHO of course. ;)

I believe Mickboy seeks out the best version (Japan, Germany, England, etc) he can find and then EQs to sweeten the sound to suit himself. I have a CDR of his version of STICKY FINGERS done from the Japanese vinyl that sounds quite good. His ALL THINGS MUST PASS (likewise from Japanese vinyl) is not nearly as good. I much prefer Chris Desjardin's effort.
Anyway, Mickboy has CDRs of SATANIC MAJESTIES and EXILE as well that I've heard and they're both good although not as impressive as STICKY FINGERS which beats any other version I know of.

The latest ABKco remaster of LIB sounds best IMO and it appears to be the only CD version from the master tape. Mickboy's work including LIB sounds unnatural to me. If you like what John Astley did with the Who's catalog, you will probably like what Mickboy did with the Stones'catalog. Those who love his work really love it.

I think the London LIB sounds awful compared to the SACD...at least 2 or 3 generations removed. I don't understand why anyone would prefer that.

I think Mickboys Exile is pretty darn good. Of course we have no SACD to compare it to.

I have collected Mickboys stuff for years. I always loved the sound considering he does try to use the best sources. His Stones stuff was good and i also got his versions of LAYLA and ALL THINGS MUST PASS. I still have his email but I have not heard anything is a year or two. I noticed on some of the Stones trader groups, he seems to be working on upgrading Bootlegs right now.

On the whole I like the Stones Mickboys. For me, they're not definative versions, but interesting variations and listening to the Stones as much as I do, a little variation is nice.

The bonus tracks are usually well chosen and in the best available quality.

One question: Can you hear the tape wrinkle in "Happy" or are my ears just really shot after that Plasmatics show in '80?
