Yeah, you're probably right about that. There definitely is only one guitar on Jumpin' Jack Flash.

I'm currently reading Stephen Davis' "Old Gods Almost Dead", and he alleges that Brian basically didn't know YCAGWYW, so his guitar playing was either rudimentary or non-existent.I can't believe that he didn't know how to play JJF, or Parachute Woman, however.

Some time before the R&R Circus, the Stones performed JJF at an award show, I think for Melody Maker or some such magazine. Supposedly, it was a kick-*** performance with the Stones firing on all cylinders. I sure wish somebody would tack THAT onto a Stones DVD, preferably without submitting it to Keith for de-Brianization.

Agreed! And the clamshell maintains the original packaging that was so cool on the original LD release.

Can't say for absolutely sure, but I'm almost sure. The Brazilian release is from Works Editores Assossiados Ltda. which I believe is the South American Abkco affiliate, but I'm not that versed in Spanish or what constitutes a legitimate authorized release in Brazil. I have seen "some" South American reissues of famous English speaking bands carried at Best Buy before (i.e., that were not available as domestic releases, probably due to other licensing issues), such as the Brazillian release Black Sabbath/BOC Black & Blue, which was scheduled for release amd then pulled last year. These are all Region 1 or Region 0 (open) releases; I don't believe that they are boots.

I ask because I´ve seen it here and quite cheap, like $10 but is a brazilian edition and I usually don´t like them. I´ve been waiting for the official Abcko and maybe is here anytime soon.

I've never seen a Brazilian DVD of a non US issued release that was not a boot.

The Deep Purple Denmark 72 is lifted from a Japanese Laser Disc. A boot for sure. The Dylan / Petty Hard to Handle 86 show is lifted from a VHS I am told.

While the copyright laws over there may make these titles impossible stop, they are not licensed, they lack all correct copyright notices in regards to the music publishers.

It is likely that they are bootlegs in every way. And if any agent or representative of the artists, publishers, or record company went to Brazil to seek a halt to production or duplication of these titles, they would find themselves standing with a shotgun in their face, and a 6 foot hole at their feet. The question they would be asked is: 1) would you like to go to the airport right now, your things are already packed? or 2) would you like to go to the promised land. it's a short 2 second ride?

That is how corrupt the country is. But what is surprising is how many people believe that they are legit releases, and how they are able to get them into Best Buy. That's a powerful force.

Abkco did not issue R & R Circus for the Brazilian market exclusively on DVD, it just don't work that way.

    Jeff,

You may be correct; I have no idea. The interactive menus, the bios, the photo gallery and dolby 2.0 and 5.1 suggested otherwise, but that's no guarantee. All I know is that the picture quality is at least as good as my LD and actually looks much better in progressive scan. In any event, without a doubt folks will want the expanded DVD Abkco will be releasing later this year, even if they already own the Brazilian DVD. At this point I would recommend waiting anyway, unless you can pick up a copy of the Brazilian release dirt cheap, because the Official Region 1 American release will make it superfluous.

Just like the Mirimax AHDN made the MPI superfluous?

    More info from Billboard:

As tipped here last month, ABKCO will on Oct. 12 offer the first DVD release of the Rolling Stones' "Rock and Roll Circus." The December 1968 concert was filmed for a television special but was never broadcast. It was finally released on CD and VHS in 1996.

The DVD edition is sourced to the original 16mm negatives, while the audio has been remixed in 5.1 Surround Sound. Commentary tracks are offered from Rolling Stones members Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Bill Wyman, plus Yoko Ono, Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson, Marianne Faithfull and director Michael Lindsay-Hogg, among others.

Among the previously unreleased clips are a backstage meeting between Jagger, Ono and John Lennon; an alternate take of Lennon performing the Beatles' "Yer Blues" with Mitch Mitchell, Richards and Eric Clapton; three additional Taj Mahal songs; an interview with the Who's Pete Townshend; and Fatboy Slim's 2003 remix of the Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil."

"Rock and Roll Circus" features the Stones performing tunes that had just appeared on their "Beggars Banquet" album: "Parachute Woman," "No Expectations," "Sympathy for the Devil" and a giddy version of "Salt of the Earth." They also performed their current hit at the time, "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and premiered "You Can't Always Get What You Want," which would debut the following year on the album "Let It Bleed."

I'm curious how the commentary tracks were recorded - was Wyman in the room with Mick and Keith together? Or was everyone recorded separately (that's my guess).

Reviving this thread to mention that I now have the DVD! I'll watch it later today. I won't run my formal review until later in the week or sometime next - it'll take me a while to get through the three commentaries - but I'll put up some initial pic/sound reactions tonight..

Updating myself: I thought the picture was... okay. I remember being more impressed with the LD, but that was probably because I thought it'd look like crap. The DVD shows decent but somewhat flat colors, is a little soft, and has no print flaws like specks or scratches but a LOT of debris around the edges of the screen. I got the impression that stuff came from the original photography.

As for the audio, the 5.1 mix is pretty good. Some iffy imaging at times - it's a forward mix without the greatest stereo definition - but usually quite good, and most of it sounds very nice. Some solid low-end from this puppy!

Thanks for the review Colin. How is the bonus material? How is alternate Yer Blues in particular?

I've not listened to the commentaries yet, but the other extras are decent. The Townshend interview's good, and the alternate "YB" is interesting. Too bad they didn't make use to the "angle" feature - it presents four camera shots all on screen at the same time, and you can't flip among them...

The "angle" feature is criminally unused when it comes to DVD. It should be a staple of these live music DVD's.

It works very well on a porno DVD i have. Nice to have all the angles when looking at a pretty girl.:D

I'd like to know how this compares with the the old, piratical DVD.

The problem with the "Angles" feature is that it (unsurprisingly) takes up an obscene amount of bandwidth, unless you're willing to master the video at a fairly low bitrate. On something like the TKAA Shepparton footage, this doesn't really matter--the outtakes weren't in great shape anyway--but you'd be looking at at *least* two DVDs if the entirety of R&R Circus were to be done in such a fashion.

    Not that I'd mind.

I didn't complain because the ENTIRE program lacked an angle option. I complained because the alternate "Yer Blues" presents four angles all at once and doesn't let us switch among them. It wouldn't have taken up that much space to let us flip through each of these fullscreen...
