........ hey man whatcha doin on our turf? You wanna rumble or something.......? Sorry, could not resist I plugged in my second TT yesterday and cranked up The Wall. I heard the needle in the groove rumbling along between tracks. I remember this phenomena from years past. It never bugged me before but now I am curious. What is this? Normal? Is this what quiet / quietex vinyl is supposed to eliminate? And is this really called "rumble"?
Gary, I'm no turntable expert, as ya know, but I kinda think maybe grounding problem, connections, feedback? (shrug)
rumble killer ideas There are mats that reduce rumble to almost nothing (Call the Needledoctor, he'll recommend one). You also may have experienced acoustic feedback, whereby the low rumble from your speakers was picked up by the needle in the groove on the record and was therefore amplified. Moving the speakers, using headphones, or placing weights or c-clamps on the corners of your 'table can reduce this problem. Some lp's are rumbly even on the best turntables. I do not have "The Wall" on vinyl so I cannot state whether this was a problem common to that lp. All my british picture lp's by Bowie and Kate Bush rumble like crazy.
Possibly because those EMI titles were really thin pressings. Rumble was what I always knew to be invariable feedback from when the cart picks up the vibration from the speakers. Causes literal "Rumble" to come out during playback. This is one of the reasons the 180g's were real popular from the get-go. Some vibration termination, and people thought it's way cool having such a BIG slab of waffle in yer hand.
