I will never say anything about a disc again until I have given it a fair chance. I think you will probably hear generally good reviews. It is as much as can be expected I guess from loud rock played in a large venue. In quiet sections (solos with low crowd noise) the sound is quite stupendous. It just starts out at the beginning of the concert quite bad. Can't get over that drum solo though. It is reference.

And you are correct, Bucky and the AKUS Live DVD-V were 2 of the discs that I played directly ahead of Rush. Sorry again. No harm done I guess because I posted ahead of the release date and I am now correcting my opinion alos ahead of the release date.

The percussion (in full surround) that is over top of the credits is very lifelike. Now I am really thinking that the concert sound is the best that it can be considering the venue etc.

Okay my friend I just don't follow you. Having read your comments on the Zep DVD-A and DVD-V I don't understand your point of reference here. You really did not like the Zep DVD-A but here is your quote about the Zep DVD-V "The DVD-V is out....with more songs and the video to go with a great 5.1 mix"

So I thought you liked the Zep DVD-V sound "great 5.1 mix"? Now you are using it as a bad point of reference?

Hey opinions vary but I have a hard time following your reviews since your opinions on releases change so much.

Well, this is the reason why I say above that I will not review again until I have given a title a good many listens to. Often, when you first buy something you are just happy to have it or maybe you had great expectations that weren't fulfilled. Initially a good or bad feeling may be present. Over time either the bloom wears off something you thought was great or the warts disappear because there are other aspects that you see/hear about the title. Another thing that can happen is that the bar could be raised on a format due to other titles you have purchased or equipment you have replaced.

As to the Led Zep DVD-A, I haven't heard it. The Led Zep DVD-V I have heard and I didn't think it was that great. Anyway, the quote you are using is me and my pal Dave was including my quote in one of his posts.

Well I too am spoiled by all the great material available out there. Do you have the DVD-V of Allision Krauss and Union Station Live? The DTS track on that disc is outstanding demo material.

Anyway, I digress, I believe that there is only Dolby 2.0 and 5.1 unlike the Rush Chronicles DVD which had a decent 48 khz PCM track.

I would say that the sound is mainly marred by crowd noise. When the crowd is quiet the detailing and clarity is quite good. I could detect really no compression. Cymbals are clear. There is crowd noise in the fronts as well. This is what makes adjustment difficult. When the crowd is boisterous you are pretty much at their mercy. I have listened to the entire concert in it's entirety twice now (not an easy task at almost 3 hours per play) and I would definately recommend it. I believe that the producers wanted to convey the actual feeling of being in the 10th row at that concert and that is pretty well what you get here. When Neil lets loose with the drum solo on "O Baterista" you can hear just how good the sound quality is when everything is quiet except for the drums. It will knock your socks off. The kick drum rearranges the furniture in my house 2 floors up from my sound room.

Sadly I have to wait until this afternoon to pick up the CD & DVD. If my car wasn't in the shop I would have been at Tower records last night at midnight! I had to beg and plead for a co-worker to take me to Tower today so I could pick up the Rush releases, and the new Pink Floyd DVD!

I went out to Best Buy during lunch and picked up the cd and DVD. I'm listening to the cd as I type this on a boom box and it ROCKS. I've been in and out of my office so I really can't comment on the whole of the concert but it seems to capture a very high energy performance.

Can't wait to get home to my real stereo and crank it. Also, want to spend some time with the DVD. Very preliminary impressions are GREAT.

    Stay Tuned.....

O.K. I've watched the drum solo seven (7) times now :D

The video quality is good. As for the sound, I had to turn down the subwoofer when listening in Dolby Digital 5.1 mode. When I listened in two channel direct mode (with Dolby Digital 2.0/5.1 disabled) it was fine. I wonder if they added LFEs to the disc to make the bass all the more bombast.

All in all, I am happy with it. Well, I wish the packaging didn't come in a DVD cardboard slip case thing.

OK, So what's with the "Anthem 75" Easter Egg? I got the By-Tor Easter Egg, but unlock the combination is baffling me, any help before I lose my mind.

I'm the one heading to the Wags Rush party from Chicago. Should be great, and Wags DOES have a great setup. Lot's of goodies on the itinerary too: I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, Dark Side of the Moon DVD, Kids Are Alright DVD, various mint/rare Beatles vinyl, vintage mint Deja Vu listening, Colts game, Beer, old college roommates, should be great!!

Just watched several tracks from the DVD and I think Wags has hit it on the head. This is not an audiophile recording but what live show is? Yes the bass is a bit heavy along with some of the guitar parts. Depending on your setup, you may have to turn the bass down a bit (most non-calibrated home theaters have too much bass already). The vocals are a bit recessed but drums sound great. All in all they have captured the energy and sense of being there that most concert films do not. Now I don't know if I would want all of my concert films to take this approach but it kind of works for Rush.

Anyway, I saw Rush in Baltimore during the tour and the DVD puts me right back in my seat as if I was there, warts and all. A great mix of new and old and overall a great performance.

What a fantastic DVD, I'm really impressed. The documentary on disc two is excellent as well. I'd write more about it tonight, but I'm going to watch the entire thing again before I go to bed.

I'm curious if anyone tried the alternate camera angles that were supposed to be on YYZ & La Villa Strangiato...

Yeah, it's totally pointless. All the angles are shifting around the stage. It would be cool if it was one angle per band member, but all of them are edited to have bits of everything, and it they change fast. So by the time you pick an angle, you're looking at something else.

I also could not find the "Anthem '75" Easter egg. This is why I hate Easter eggs.

The documentary shows the band in South America- warming up, talking about the tour, press, and cracking wise. Apparently, soup is very important. It's about an hour long.

So the 2nd disc is a mixed bag. I wouldn't have minded if it were not included and the price was lower.

But the concert itself... ROCKS! I like the bass-heavy mix and the audience's enthusiasm is electric. The set list is awesome and near-3 hour run time is just so cool. I had a real blast watching and listening to this last night. It's the ultimate celebration of Rush.

Well, I love this performance and bonus disc as well, but I do have a few caveats that drop it down a notch or two from what should be a "statement" DVD performance by the band:

    1) Like Mike B, I'm apparently "easter egg challenged" and haven't been able to navigate to the extra goodies.

    2) Secondly, I'm a tad disappointed about the bait & switch on the anamorphic video presentation, the producer's excuse, mentioned in the musictap link provided by Tyler, notwithstanding.

    3) Lastly, even though the last three performances are essentially a medley, these tracks should be accessible independent of each other as are all the other tracks. The band has released Working Man as a single separate from the medley, so shouldn't we be able to listen to it separate from the other two encore tracks?

Overall, the concert sounds great even though Geddy's voice could be a little more forward in the mix and Alex's guitar could be brought up for a little more edge on some tracks, but this is just nit-picking. As concert DVDs go, this is a worthwhile addition to every progressive & hard rock fan's collection; it displays the band in fine form, IMO.

I doubt those stats include mass retailers like Wal Mart. I could be wrong, though.
