Here's my take on the 2017 reissues I've picked up: 1. So Tough: Quiet pressing, flat, centered. Not a tick or pop anywhere. Huge improvement over my original pressing in the quiet-ness department. Sounds great too, although I'll need to do a head-to-head w/my original at some point. Artwork is well done, although the cover photo is a bit too contrast-y and lacks the blue hue of the original pressing. If you don't own an original you'd never notice. 2. Continental: Another quiet, perfect pressing. Sound quality is again really really good. Artwork looks beautiful. Unfortunately there are numerous typos and misspellings in the credits and liner notes, not sure what happened. I don't have an original to compare with. 3. Good Humor: Quiet, perfect, blah blah blah. Sounds great, but will need to compare with my original UK pressing. Artwork is spot-on vs. the original, but printed on better paper. Once again, there are some typos in the credits, though not nearly as many as Continental. 4. Sound of Water: Haven't played this one yet. I have a Sub Pop original so will need to compare. Artwork looks great, better than my original. No typos!
well I spoke to soon, "existentialism" is misspelled in the 'Sound of Water' liner notes. These little mistakes are so odd I almost think they're deliberate, some sort of in-joke. I mean how do misspelled words sneak by when anything you type with has a spell checker? but whatever, the record sounds great. Now the completist in me wants to get the reissues of Finisterre (never owned it on vinyl) and Turnpike (owned it, but sold long ago). I'm also kicking myself for selling my vinyl copy of 'Words and Music' which doesn't seem to be part of this reissue series.
Bonjo, you will be pleased to know that the vinyl for Words and Music is being reissued nest year, as well a Casino Classics with a slightly different track / remix selection
Their site was particularly slow today but it worked and I snagged a bundle. I'm glad they are putting these out.
I bought the bundle too. Their server is rubbish though, it took ages to complete the transaction as usual.
A few people on the Saint Etienne are saying that the dispatch emails were sent in error, the same thing happened when folks ordered the Dive single on vinyl and CD and had a dispatch email for the vinyl as well as the CD, when the CDs were sent out. The vinyl was delayed and issued later.
Bought the bundle as well. Especially looking forward to having I Love To Paint on vinyl. That one brings great memories back, getting an entire fan club album in the mail. Played it quite a bit. No dispatch notice.
I listened through both ILTP and NP the day before they went on sale and decided to pass. Built On Sand is the only one of their fan club albums I'd consider picking up. They all have great tracks on them, but I find them a little too patchy. Plus, I'm dropping enough money already getting the studio album reissues. I'll probably focus on getting some of the singles on 12'' or 7'' next. I wonder if part two of Saint Etienne on 45 will ever be released.
Hopefully you will get a dispatch email soon 3Dman, I got mine overnight after emailing the store about my order that vanished from my order history , but has now reappeared !!!!!! You can check the status of your order via the following link Login - greedbag I only checked as I got fed fed up seeing people on FB saying that they had got a dispatch email and I hadnt
Yeah, I picked it up- I’ve only played it through once and nothing terrible stood out, though I think it loses a bit of quality towards the end of each side because there’s some groove-cramming going on. But it also might be that I’ve had ‘The Sea’ (one of my absolute favourite Ets songs) on 10” vinyl for years and it sounds like a monster, whereas the LP version didn’t have the same kick by comparison.
My son in law is a huge fan , even had 'Urban Clearway' played at the wedding party . He owned an apartment before the marriage in what was once Tiger Bay Cardiff [ dockands ethnic community]. The photograph on 'So Tough' is very similar to a photo of my daughter, that I took of her , from the mid eighties complete with 'Harrington'jacket. Sarah Cracknell and my daughter are both slim blonde and favor each other . He went to see them recently on their nation wide tour. So glad he chooses St.Etienne and not his next favourite band ...............Ned's Atomic Dustbin!
My very first post on here (I think) was about the front cover of So Tough - I grew up about 500m from where the photo was taken:
I highly recommend Good Humor (or Good Humour if you're from the U.K.) as I believe it was their musical peak, YMMV.
But it’s Good Humor on both sides isn’t it? Because they were tired of being pigeonholed as ‘quintessentially British’ and from the gatefold of The Beach Boy’s Sunflower where Brian is wearing a Good Humor hat?
Yes its always been Good Humor on both sides Its the little things like this that make them Saint Etienne
