Is that a reference to the image in the gatefold of For the Roses?

For me, it's a good album with some great moments, but it pales a bit compared to the two that surround it. It's a little too uneven.
Yeah, I overlooked PinUps since that didn't contain any original material, so it was more of side project than a proper album, but that would be the logical choice otherwise.

But Let It Be wasn't sandwiched in between them release wise.
Yellow Submarine fulfills your concept in between White and Abbey

    Bowie for me would be
    Diamond Dogs
    Young Americans
    Station to Station

    or
    Aladdin Sane
    Pin Ups
    Diamond Dogs
but that almost goes without saying

...again I like the Crinkle album, but it was a badly timed minor release of low key, slightly musaky instrumentals, following on from the relative success of 'Primitive Painters'

    I’d say:
    Janis Joplin

    Cheap Thrills
    Kozmic Blues
    Pearl

KB is the weakest, but it still is a good, underrated album, right now is my favorite of Janis’.

The difference in album quality is not relevent.
You could also make a few good Beatle albums with material from 1970-1973.
    McCartney is not the Beatles.
    The Beatles is not McCartney.
Michael Jackson is not the Jacksons.
The Jacksons are not Michael Jackson.

McCartney hasn't been McCartney for the longest.
It's funny how fans & artists themselves like to make excuses for failing. Soundtracks, mixtapes, side projects, aliases, collaborations, contract obligations, EPs, live albums, covers album, unreleased/demos, bootlegs. But if it's good, then they'll accept it as official.

Fear of Music is awesome and was rated album of the year by the NME in the golden year of 1979.
