KLIZ's website is reporting that the majority of the original Santana band is getting back together to cut a new album together. The article says that Carlos is describing the material as likely to be very "African" sounding. They are going to try to have the album out next year.

This sounds interesting to me, but I sure won't buy it without hearing it first.

The article I saw said Neal Schon, Shrieve and most likely Rollie as well. Could be great, or could be a real stinker. It'll certainly get a lot of attention from the Santana faithful thats for sure!

My fear on the article is it seams like guest spots on a Carlos Santana album, rather than all of them getting together in a room and seeing what happens, fresh.

If is truly Santana IV awesome, if its as lame as his last 2-3 "star studded" slick production fests, I'll pass.

I'm in for it, as long as Schon doesn't take a photo of his ***** :help:

If that lineup does a whole album, actually in the studio together, it could be the classic rock event of the year. Maybe the instrumental album Carlos cut last year finally got him back into music, as opposed to being a guest artist on his own album. Serious potential here, as I don't doubt Schon and Rolie still have the chops to make something truly special.

Crossed fingers for this. I so want this guy to make some music with meat on its bones.

He's too good a player to allow himself to be Clived.

Carlos had better keep a close eye on his wife with him around.

I hope Chepito Areas is involved, he was a major part of Santana. It's sad that Coke Escovedo, and David Brown aren't around to join the reunion. This is great to me. Personally I'd love it if Santana made music with anyof the early 70's musicians. The original band, armando Peraza, Pete Escovedo, Pablo Tellez, Wendy Haas, Airto Moreira, Glora Purim, and especially Tom Coster.

By the way I saw a video where Chepito was being interviewed and spoke negatively about Carlos Santana and accused him of stealing songs from the other band members that were involved throughout the years. If he's not involved in this reunion that may be why. Chepito from the interviews and videos I've seen of him doesn't seem like he's all there mentally. I read in the "Voices Of Latin Rock" book that when he was stricken by a near fatal brain hemorrhage in 1971 he was never the same again. Perhaps his mental health has deteriorated. I hope not as I love his timbale work. He's amazing.

Not sure why Carlos would want an 'African-sounding' recording given his Latin-American background. However, I'll be waiting with baited breath for this one, particularly if it's Santana III Pt II or Caravanserai PtII

Gregg Rollie was the true talent in the band Santana.
I have a CD by Abraxas Pool, which is essentially Santana without Carlos Santana.
It sounds far more like Santana than Carlos Santana does.
What made the Santana sound was Gregg Rolies vocals and keyboard and the percussion.

Honestly, I wish they would get back together without Neil Schon. Much as I like his work in the Rollie era Journey, the guy just wankers way to much now. Seems like he wants to fill every spot he can in a song up with a flurry of notes now.

Well Santana has always added a bit of African into their music such as Jingo, which is a cover from an African artist whose name I've forgotten. His background isn't very Latin. He's bluesier, and psychedelic rock I suppose. Learned a lot from Javier Batista but if you mean that because he comes from Mexico nah man. He'd be playing Mariachi influenced rock or something like that haha! His father was a mariachi and can be heard playing Violin on Dos from Malo.

I hope they make some good music, but of course it won't be the same band without Chepito or David Brown.

As an aside, the original Santana band (WITH Chepito and Brown) played a set at Shoreline Amphitheatre on 8/17/86 - I won't encourage anyone to go trying to find tapes, but video of the set is on Youtube, if anyone wants to look it up.

Nice to see this reunion happening & good to see that Carlos' bad blood with Carabello from the early 70's is long since over (a bust-up between those two fractured the original band the first time around).

Ditto. I was going to post: Will they recapture the magic of the first album? I doubt it.

Oh wait, I guess I did post it after all!:D

Neil Schon sports a hefty instrument? I didn't know that.

My understanding from another website is that it will be the line-up from Woodstock except that bassist David Brown is deceased so I do not know who will handle the bass parts.

Agreed of the early sound but if he isn't up to the task, and at least in this thread there seems to be a question about that, Carlos has had some of the greatest timbales players in his bands over the years. Just get Pete Escovedo, who has played with Santana, to sit in. Or maybe Giovanni Hidalgo. He's known more as a conga player but he also can play the timbales. Nobody is better than him.

Agreed with earlier posters that Michael Schrieve and Gregg Rolie were essential to the Santana band's sound.

I'd be really looking forward to this record if it comes about. I loved early Santana. The stuff from the past ten years, not so much.
