I'm sure somebody has tried to pitch a Steffon movie. I'm not sure there are any characters I'd want to see a whole movie of. Even the characters, I don't think could work for a movie. Maybe an Adventures of Brecky and ? (Vanessa and Cecily as the two ex-porn stars). I think a feature length is just too much. I could do with a 30 to 60 minute episode about the ex-actress Mindy (Kristen Wiig) who was always on the "Secret Word" sketches.

Steffon is probably the biggest name recurring character from recent years, but could you imagine a whole movie of that? Yikes! It was bad enough when they decided it was funnier to have Bill laugh rather than stay in character as Steffon. But either way, that's a guy best taken in small doses.

To get back to my point about funny people, look at the movies of the people who have been on SNL. There have been some really great funny movies from just the original cast. Funny people, or people who are funny, can make people laugh almost anywhere. As seen from above, the funny movies have really dwindled. I think it says a lot about those people and others who haven't been successful. I don't know if there's a dearth of funny people currently, but SNL isn't getting it done.

  3. Or even worse...the character that was like a retarded Little Orphan Annie, Gilly or something like that?

You both just nailed my two most hated, OVER PLAYED sketches ever...once was more than enough yet if I remember correctly, both made it to multiple SEASONS, wtf!

  5. Same with most of the recurring characters. The only SNL-based movies that didn't stink on ice and weren't box office disasters were The Blues Brothers and the Wayne's World movies. And even on those it's not hard to find disagreement.

Gilly was awful. Awful, awfu, awful. But Kristen really loved the character, apparently, and there was an an SNL special for that character, if I remember. I think she has a bit of that "Oh you don't like this? Well now I'll do it more" streak that some comics have.

She was never my favorite not ready for prime time player, middle of the pack in my opinion. When she hosted last time, the episode was cringe worthy. Really set my opinion of her even farther back.

There is dissension for The Blues Brothers? Wayne's World I could see because some consider it juvenile, but I always thought The Blues Brothers was universally acclaimed. Blues Brothers 2000 is indisputably awful, granted, but The Blues Brothers is a classic!

Oh my God. I haven't watched SNL in years. Many years. But was browsing this forum on the wonderful site and subsequently decided to go to YouTube and see what this "Gilly" was all about.

And while I may be accused of hyperbole, I must say, what I saw was the televisual equivalent of cancer. If there is a Hell, those sketches are playing down there 24/7. I cannot believe professional people thought that was humor. I recall funnier things being rejected when me and some total amateur friends of mine would put on shows in high school. I recall funnier things being enacted by my cat in the middle of the night by pure happenstance. There was "an SNL special for that character"??? If I had any respect left for SNL, it has now been pulverized into atoms.

By far one of the funniest aspects of SNL is ho0w far some people will go to proclaim how unfunny it is. I mean, making people sit there week after week just so they can talk about how it isn't funny and it's too political and the black castmembers are bug-eyed and stupid (yeah, we see you) and all that? Pure comedy gold, if you ask me.

Man. People on this thread have moved on from hating on this season to hating on a character from nearly a decade ago. :help:

Sorry to poop on your favorite sketch. I post enough positive things about the show, just making it real with a little balance.

  14. Believe it! I know there are some who think it’s an overlong mess not redeemed by the music performances. I believe forum regular @Oatsdad is one such person...

Me too! For the youngin's out there, iron-on's were these things you bought in a not really a head shop, but, a gift shop for stoners at the mall, they had posters, black light things, lava lamps and these iron on art that you ironed onto a t-shirt, they had a certain look like that Steve Martin pic, very cool stuff. That and if you knew some of the staff a baggie might find it's way into your bag of purchases

Are you implying that this was once a good thing? Or even a thing?

The Blues Bothers arguably garnered some noteriety with the first film, and Wayne’s World certainly has the one hit (although the Wayne character was a carryover from Mike Myers’ work in Canada prior to SNL), but
I can’t think of any other SNL spin-off into motion pictures that had anywhere near that kind of recognition.

And I’m not quite sure if that was even a notable aspect of SNL sketches.

NO! a thousand times NOOO!!! lol!

imo they nearly all stunk (I don't count the blues brothers) the nadir of cinema, 'it's pat' 'the ladies man' are the worst but theyre nearly all bad. I actually thought magruber / coneheads had some moments. I ws just commenting how they stopped doing it when it was a cottage industry for a while, I think the lack of really known recurring characters and changes to movie biz kind of put the kibosh on it. waynes world was probably the biggest hit but I never got really got it....schwing

Let's also add Caddyshack, Groundhog Day, Animal House, the Vacation movies, This Is Spinal Tap and other lesser movies.

Those movies were great because of the SNL characters involved.

What SNL characters were in any of those movies?
SNL actors, show. If that's your criterion, just note that almost every big comedy movie in revent years has been filled with current and past SNL cast members.

If I have to name all the SNL members in each movie, it’ll take a while. Are you unfamiliar with the movies? Please name “every big comedy movie ... filled with current members” and we’ll see how they compare.

Never really thought of This Is Spinal Tap as an "SNL movie".

People are discussing movies that were based on "SNL" characters - Blues Brothers, Wayne and Garth, Coneheads, etc.

Movies with "SNL" actors are a different beast...
