Saw Van in concert at the MSG Theater in NYC last night. IMHO one of the best concerts I have ever been to. First the mechanics where all there, good seats, good acoustics in the venue, and for once the sound engineers got it right. Loud but sensible volume levels, well balanced - you could hear all of the instruments, plenty of bass, but the main thing you heard was Van. Van was great, he did one 90 minute set with no breaks, his voice was strong from start to finish. He played harmonica, alto sax and guitar. Each of the band members had solo's on various songs. I lost count but he must of done 20 songs, I tried to find a set list on the web but could not. There were two strange things at the concert that surprised me. First, a lot of people do not read. The tickets said in plain English "No warm up band, start time 7:30 P.M. sharp". At 7:30 P.M. the lights went down and they started to play. First there was a huge crush of people who were out at the concession stands who did not realize what 7:30 P.M. sharp means, and then to my complete shock people strolled in as late as 8:20 P.M. to get their seats thinking they has just blown off the warm up band only to realize they missed more than half of the concert. The other strange thing was that on Van's orders once the concert started there was no more sale of any alcohol, which seemed strange because the kind of crowd that goes to see Van is not the kind that gets crazy drunk.
