It's a good movie, very good even, but not nearly as great as Goodfellas .

I thought it was just reheated "Goodfellas", which was Scorsese's masterpiece and his last really great film in my opinion. Pesci looked weird and lots of Sharon Stone yelling didn't help my opinion.

Both are killer films, both have killer music soundtracks!

I think this film would have fared better critically had Scorsese simply cast different actors than DeNiro and Pesci in the leads. With both essentially reprising their GOODFELLAS roles -- control freak, out-of-control nutjob -- the movie stood very little chance of being viewed on its own merits.

I think it's a very good movie undone by its unshakable proximity to a great one.

I think it's the same phenomenon that we experience with albums. Remember all those greatest album lists of all time done in the 80's? Some of those albums have lost some of their luster due to overexposure while others from the same band have become more revered due in some part IMHO due to it being more "fresh" and not overexposed.

Great movie, but I was watching it a few months ago and it was pissing me off somewhat. Every scene it seemed like there was a new song BLASTING on the soundtrack, like it was a parody of Goodfellas. They're killer songs but it was bugging me a bit.

Unquestionably one of the top 10 GOAT mob flicks ever made. Arguably top 5. Interesting to note that the best of these films are 99.9% of the time based on true events. Even movies like the Godfather and The Departed are based on reality. Here's hoping that Scorcese's newest mob project feat. DeNiro and the boys is worthy, gotta say at this point that it seems almost like a desperation move for the both of them!

There are fan edits of this movie which drastically reduce Sharon Stone's screen time. Last time I watched it, she almost ruined the movie for me.

Almost every scene she's in, she's crying and us hysterical. Talk about ear fatigue...

The last third is sort of tedious.

But surely that's the character? I find this similar to criticisms of Kate Capshaw's performance in Temple of Doom: she's only playing what is written for the character. If the character is unduly annoying, whiny or loud beyond what some believe is necessary for the role (thus detracting from the film), the fault lies with the writer or director.

Interestingly, no-one ever says the same of Joe Pesci: "Almost every scene he's in, he's screaming and yelling and cussing...!" Yes, because that's the character he's playing.

I personally didn't need to be hit over the head with a mallet to understand what the character was about. Don't think I'm revealing much in that many thought SS had too much screen time.

That's absolute insanity. In no way is "Casino" "more accomplished" and/or "artistically mature" than "GoodFellas".

"GF" is Scorsese's best film. It beats "Casino" in every possible way.

    "Casino" is cinematic self-plagiarism...

It's kind of funny... When Goodfellas came out, I remember being really annoyed by the fact that Scorsese decided to do another film with a narrative. I loved Taxi Driver, and thought Goodfellas copied a little too much from that. Then Casino came out, and I'm like... "What? Again?"

Still can't watch it. The baseball bat scene.

    Less clownish, more psycho.
Robbie Robertson has been Scorsese's music guy for years, all the way back to Raging Bull, I believe.
Having read both of the Nicholas Pileggi book the films are based on they are pretty accurate adaptations for the most part..."Only the names have been changed to protect the guilty", as Bon Scott once said.
The infamous "head in a vice" scene is pretty cringeworthy as well.

I like it, Its obviously not as good as Goodfellas but few films are though. Only issue I ever really had with Casino was that I don't like Sharon Stone in the film.

I own it and like it up until everything starts going wrong, as I’ve already seen that on Goodfellas. I get the message.
The film may well be remembered as Sharon’s best work.

Casino is really good, but it can't touch Goodfellas. Few movies can.

    Critics are clowns.
