I watched one of my two favorites today: "What's Up Doc". As you might suspect, "Bringing Up Baby" is the other. If you consider the somewhat darker "Ruthless People" a screwball comedy, that would also be up there.

Enjoy - especially if you've never seen it before.

    From your link....
Well - that does narrow the candidate list from what I was thinking of.

I think it is more accurate to describe many screwball comedies as having women who give as good as they get. Think of His Girl Friday as a classic example.

Would The Money Pit be considered a screwball comedy?

I'm partial to "Nothing Sacred," for two reasons:
    #1: Carole Lombard
    #2: Technicolor.

Libeled Lady is a great one.

Twentieth Century and My Man Godfrey are also essential, not just because they're great films (the latter especially), but because they star "the Queen of Screwball Comedy" herself, Carole Lombard (*swoon*).

I've heard great things about them but haven't seen them. I will as soon as I can, though. Lombard was married to Clark Gable, right?

"Bringing Up Baby": Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant, the former looking more brilliant that I'd thought possible, not just for her, but anyone.
    "His Girl Friday": Nonstop.
"My Man Godfrey": After watching this with a friend, for weeks after we were chiding each other in Carole Lombard's voice, "Maybe if some people would pay attention to other people's feelings . . ." You'll know what I mean if you've seen it. :)
"Trouble in Paradise": Another good one, though Carole's up against it this time.

But my favorite has got to be "The Lady Eve." Henry Fonda is a stiff, and Barbara Stanwyck is sublime, the most sophisticated and beguiling and hilarious set of multiple personalities you'll ever see on screen -- but still "positively the same dame." :) Check out David Thomson's summary in "Moments that Made the Movies."

Not sure the definition of screwball but Mad, Mad, World would be top.

She was married to William Powell in the early 30s, after a few years they divorced and several years later she married Gable in 1939.

I would consider one of my favorite '80s movies, Tootsie, a screwball comedy or very close to one.

You tell the truth. Carole Lombard IS the queen. I recently saw Twentieth Century and The Lady Eve and they are fantastic. It Happened One Night is almost an early bible of the form but I could equally say My Man Godfrey is the blueprint. What fun it must have been to be in the theatre and listen to people enjoy these films when they first came out.
