I agree in many things you state. I do not, however, consider that records sold and a poll in this or other connoisseur's forum indicate similar things. Actually, they may be very different, and that's OK.

Precisely for some of the reasons you hate these polls, is that I like them...

At best, they measure broad consensus, but not necessarily artistic excellence.

@Thievus, you certainly DID put forward a top 5. Regarding asking for peoples top 20. I read every entry a a number large enough to be noticed asked to be able to put more than a top 5, top 10 and some a top 20. Now no-one needs put 20 albums forward in the big poll, they need not put forward 10 or 5 or 1, but if someone feels that it is important to vote for up to 20 that`s OK.

    No @PCM7027 you didn`t vote.

How about you dear @vince make that list out.

No a link would not be too difficult for someone with good manners. :agree:

Sports??? This poll was not for sport. There are those on here, me included, who enjoy these kind and definitely do not it as sport.

Once the votes have come in for the bigger poll to be held later in the year I hope to be able to break down the results taking in genres and decades.

Ha, thanks @Chemguy, that was the word I should have used. I just couldn`t think of relevant when I needed it. Apologies to all RS fans who took umbrage at my use of viable. I do enjoy RS`s political comments in these times.

Perhaps we should have to put one black person and an album from the `80`s & `90`s & `00`s & whatever they call this decade in which we know reside in our top 5 choices. I think not. But of course you are joking @Jim B. if not you can start that moaners and groaners thread now. :uhhuh:

I didn't vote, I guess I missed that particular one. My top album is Automatic for the People, with Sgt Pepper around 8. As for Rubber Soul, "Run For Your Life" sticks in my craw enough that it isn't it my top 56.

Ah yeah, I remember that thread. I thought you were originally referring to a "vote for your top 20" thread.

This poll represents .3% of the membership here, so IMO, the only thing it shows is that people weren't interested in the thread whatsoever.

    Great list!

Funny, when it comes to the Beatles, I like Yellow Submarine (my #1), Rubber Soul, the White Album, MMT and Pepper, long before I throw Revolver and Abbey Road on the turntable.

I love them all, but barely listen to Revolver/AR for some strange reason.

Strange that Run for your life gets so much criticism which obviously comes from the lyrics. I think this is partly cultural, me and my schoolmates (half were women), sang along to that tune so many times in Argentine 1966 and had no second thoughts. Secondly, why is it taken as a first-person statement?

    Polls are really popular today.

The media uses them a lot.

You can get a poll to say about whatever you want it to say.

    Polls are awesome.

And oh so statistically valid, reliable, and credible.

I like Pepper more than I did when I first scrutinized it in 1987 as "the greatest album of all-time"----the latter half had fallen short for me----and I had been so blown away by Revolver, The White Album and Abbey Road---all those gems that I'd never really heard in my then 6 years of intense top 40 radio listening.

I think now my loaded expectations clouded my judgement a little----although i still think Revolver is the superior album----Pepper is damn near.

Yea I don't understand all the moaning and groaning. A member ask people to list their top 5 albums. Another member tallies the results and lists them here. What's the grumbling for??? I enjoyed it.

This is a music forum and I assume we are here because we like to talk about music. I enjoyed looking at the top fives of those that voted.

A lot more entertaining than most threads these days.

Or it could mean that members of the forum didn't see the poll because it wasn't on the first page,
which is often jammed with beatles, floyd, and bowie threads about shipping box sets.

Shows more than that, e.g. those interested came up with these rankings/favorites, shows the love for the music of the OP, shows that you care enough to express your opinion here, and so forth...

Oh I'm with you. Not sure why this was taken offense at? I wasn't referring to your initial thread. I enjoy reading all lists and rankings (as I stated). I always like to see people's favorites and, especially, why they may prefer album X to album Y, etc. I always learn a lot and often times the lists can result in being turned on to an album or artist one is unfamilar with but might be up their alley and so forth. List threads are infinitely more productive and enjoyable to me than the negativity or critical threads, in my opinion. Which is what I was trying to get at.

When I said "sports", I meant the negative aspect of some rankings or comparisons where sometimes one artist or one album has to either be diminished or bolstered to account for the preference of another. You will see this with "Revolver vs Pepper" all the time. Some seem to slight Pepper because Revolver accomplished much of the territory first. While having a preference for one of the two albums is fine (I take Pepper myself), I don't view them as competing records. To me, Pepper is simply the next extension of the Revolver album and I see no reason why either need be compared to the other in a "all or nothing" sense. Both stand alone as individual works.

That's what I meant by I don't treat arts as "sports". Your post was perfectly fine and I enjoyed reading it. :)

Or perhaps it could mean they remember the last "Your Top 5 Albums Of All Time", which was still going just a few months before this one started, and didn't feel like doing it again?
