I have this receiver and I think I got it for something over $60 on sale at The Shack a few years ago. I use for computer audio and it sounds fine tied to my Infinity Kappa 5 speakers. I have not used in my main system so I don't know how it would compare to the Onkyo AVR in place now.

From now until April 9, this receiver is on sale for $89.99 according to radioshack.com

I was thinking about this unit, but it seemed poorly built -- in particular, the volume knob felt loose; like it was ready to fall off -- when I checked it out today at the local Radio Shack.

Mine is going great to this very day and I've had it since I started this thread.

I'm definitely willing to reconsider and give it a shot. The price is certainly right.

That's a great price! I might pick one up this weekend for a bedroom system that I want to assemble.

I ran into a guy who has several vintage receivers for sale- price negotiable. He has a Sherwood S-7100, Pioneer DQ-8000 Quad receiver, Technics S-299 (iirc), Kenwood 4010 as well as several turntables: Garrard, Realistic,Technics (No SL-1200's though), JVC PL-517 (iirc). Any thoughts on the vintage Sherwood versus the New model? I need to put together a system for my son to take to college.

Same guy had a pair of Yamaha NS-10Ts, but didn't want to sell them. He did have several larger Pioneer and Sansui Bookshelf speakers that were probably too large for a dorm room.

Need a new quick and dirty receiver for the workplace, and I will probably get this one. Thanks, Brad.

I bought mine on a recommendation from Brad as a Black Friday special at Radio Shack for $60 paired with a Pioneer PD-06 sacd/cd player and a set of JBL J2050's and the sound quality is outstanding.

Thanks Brad.....Still loving that Amy Grant signed pic too!!.....:righton:

I'm still using a Sherwood Dolby Surround receiver I bought in 1995, use it in the computer room/"recording studio" - still works as well as it did brand new. Bought a second Sherwood receiver about 7 years ago, it works great as well. They make good stuff.

I have one sitting next to me right now - it's hooked up to the outputs of my two computers in the office. I have one playing a playlist through it right this minute! :D

I know and it is amazing. It goes to show how influential I end up being to the market thanks to me being on this forum.

Have you receive the commission check from Sherwood yet? :D

  17. I bought a Sherwood from Circuit City (before discovering the Onkyo 5.1 AV line 6 or so years ago). It would not drive my Maggie IIIa speakers, not enough current. Can't say I held onto it long enough to try it with anything else (because it needed to do that at least).

That's a pretty tall order for a $100 receiver... :sigh:

I've had the 409 (?) model for about a month now and it meets my needs just fine. I have a limited budget and like someone said earlier, I'd rather be spending money on music than equipment.

Yeah, but ya takes yer chances that the thing will last for a little bit. Not well made, but you may get lucky - then again, you may not. I prefer a manufacturer with a track record of proven reliability.

For the price, it'd be hard to beat, but members here have reported Sherwood receivers failing within a few months after purchase.

I haven't read this entire thread but I just wanted to point out that somewhere around 4 - 6 years ago (sorry I can't remember exactly when) ...

I bought a Sherwood reciever from Circuit City for $99.99 and it is still going strong after all these (4 or more) years.

The model I have is the RX-4105 which seems very similar to this Radio Shack 4109 model ... except mine lacks a PHONO input.

I'm currently using a TCC TC-750 Phono pre-amp which cost me something like $45 - $50 and was purchased from phonopreamps.com

Perhaps I got lucky with mine but it works fine and sounds fine. Prior to this I had a very expensive Sony ES receiver but I just don't have the money I used to have and the Sony broke down after 10 years or so and I needed something good and cheap. This Sherwood has served me well.

The 4105 is still on the market.

They seem like a bit of a crapshoot given the comments that they have failed for some owners, but on the other hand I have two that I've had for over three years (one powering my TV audio and the other now serving mostly as a radio in my coworker's office) with no problems.
