Oddly I see that one broken quite often.

I think there needs to be a middle view, somewhere between "Trust your ears" and "Only total scientific proof will do"

I say keep it open but only if posts are restricted to the following subjects:

    1) cables

    2) power conditioners

    3) power cords

    4) the Bose 901

    5) double blind testing

    6) the lack of sound difference between amplifiers

PLEASE keep it open, it is so handy sometimes! Like how to set up a streaming network, buying advice, or whatever.

Some people forget to MIND THEIR MANNERS and be polite.

Almost everyone forgets EACH PERSON HAS DIFFERENT HEARING,

Those principles should be embedded as sub-forum rules, and those who can't follow them should be suspended for a while.

PS. As I just posted in the power cord thread, use your ignore list if one of the so-called bad apples is spoiling your enjoyment of the forum. If certain people are generally acting like raging a-holes on a regular basis and enough people ignore them, they'll hopefully go away because no one will respond to them. At the very least you won't have to see them anymore.

I agree with you on this KT.

On a related issue, and this is a point I tried to make in this thread, is that it is hardly a truism that each of us hears "differently." I see this often, and it sometimes is accompanied by evident frustration from the person voicing it that others don't immediately subscribe to it. But it is a position that is just as aggressive, epistemologically, and in need of an argument, as the position that goes something like "Double-blind tests prove you are full of malarkey."

I'm not taking the latter view -- I just wish that the former came with a bit more awareness regarding the nature of the claim being made.

I suspect people adopt it and say it because they think it sounds tolerant (and it is, generally, except as it is used in discussion with those who do not subscribe to it). But it is a positive claim about the nature of sensory perception, and just like any positive claim, it needs proof if it is supposed to bind us. And, frankly, just as I don't think there is any proof for its opposite, I don't think there is any proof for it either.

This section has really helped me figure out how I wanted to set up my music server, as well as clued me in to some great values out there in the audio world. I actually find it more directly useful than the music section.

I have learned a lot from the hardware forum and would like it to stay open. Some of the threads do get tiresome with the same people arguing back and forth but you can always scroll past it. The hardware discussions here are among the best I've found online.

I vote to keep it open.:righton:
As a newer member the first thing I noticed is the negativity that certain subjects always bring out.
Seems that it is almost like a game to some to see how many buttons they can push.
I have learned to use the ignore function.
The hardware section is a very valuable resource that should not be done away with because some people cant get along with others.

Please keep the hardware section open. It's what drew me here in the first place. I've listened to music for decades but only just got into gear over the past two years or so. The hardware section is invaluable for research. Prior to this blog I had never heard of Fisher tubes amps. Knew nothing about the importance of isolation and room treatments or the difference between MM and MC...etc...Also, the "share pics of your two channel system" threads are a joy. It would be a shame to lose this aspect of the site.

It's quite simple : those individuals that "asked that the forum be closed" - ban THEM. Problem solved. :D

If that rule were actually enforced I think a lot of the heat would go away. I see so many of those kinds of comments I had no idea it was even a rule.

What is so unfortunate about all of these threads is people have a tough time seeing past the equipment they own and the perspective they subscribe to. Just because I don't like your turntable, etc etc, doesn't mean your turntable is bad, or that it's a personal attack on you.

There are so many different ways to mix and match this stuff, it's not funny, yet just like your favorite beer, car or sports team it gets way too personal way too quickly. And I'm just as guilty as anyone here.

There's nothing wrong with a battle once in a while. Battles are part of life.

I frequent some other non-audio boards that make this one look like a tea party. And the information I get from them is important too.

Audio hardware is going to have controversy. It's healthy for someone who wants to consider an audio concept to be able to read a SH HW thread and see that it is a divisive issue.

I'm not for more censorship. I'm for less.

SH forums are an invaluable resource to me. The less restricted people are to say what they want, the more valuable that resource becomes for me.

Frankly, the less-moderated forums I frequent are hilarious. Their tendency towards increased harshness does not hurt me in any way.

In a perfect world we could settle our differences by having each other over and listening to stereos together.

Until then, a little verbal boxing here or there is fine.

As people have said, if you don't like it, don't enter the board. Simple.

Without hardware discussions, this would be just another internet message board. There are a very few members who feel it is their God-given purpose in life to incite a riot in every thread. They are easily ignored. Don't let the few ruin it for the many.

-1 Some people really like to argue, fine-tune their debating skills, play devil's advocate instead of using Viagra, etc. It doesn't have to be this way, and it's NOT adding to the enjoyment of those here to learn and share experiences without having to skip all the threads where people have decided to do verbal battle. IMHO.
edit: I mostly mean this in the context of when arguments start over something that really isn't related to the OP. My def of a threadcrap, but not everyone's. I'm not for censorship either, I just don't like when threads get taken over by 2 or 3 people arguing over something that's not adding to he OP.

If what I'm reading bothers me I read something else.

Just like changing the radio or TV station if I'm not entertained.

Don't forget AC sockets, differences in identical CDs that are bit-for-bit the same but sound different, and whether burn-in affects solid state components, speakers, and headphones. Oh, and holding cables off the ground with wooden sticks and/or strings. And green ink pens and the Shokti Stone. And the Tice Clock.

The nature of internet discussion groups is debate and arguing. While in one respect, it would be peaceful without that all the time, it'd also get mighty dull. I'm all for respectful debate, but people gotta mind their manners.
