Arguably popularized in popular culture by the Michael Andrews and Gary Jules version of Tears for Fears' Mad World in the Donnie Darko film, slowed down cover versions of songs have now reached epidemic proportions.

I can't go a day without hearing one in a tv show, movie or commercial.

What are some slowed down cover versions you've heard in pop culture and where did you hear it? What did you think of it?

I'm not a fan of the Mad World cover version on its own as I like the music in the original better, but I don't remember being bothered by the cover in the film.

I love the way Rush slowed down Buffalo Springfield's Mr. Soul

Snow & Voices version of The Cure's "Disintegration."

I'd owned singer Lauri Kranz's albums and enjoyed them, so when her version of Disintegration was done for one of those Cure tribute things I of course heard it. Love her version - the starkness of it, how she builds it up even it that stripped down form. Should have done a longer version with more of the lyrics though....

Vanilla Fudge - You Keep Me Hangin' On

Is it me, or did they try to be a metal version of The Rascals? It looks like it to me.

Speaking of Tears for Fears, Lorde did a drastically slowed down versio of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World". It's okay, but I much prefer TFF's original and the way it juxtaposes the sad lyrics with the upbeat instrumentals.

Lee Hazlewood's lounge version of Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On always blows me away (in the most breeziest manner, that is).

Yeah I think Vanilla Fudge cornered the market. Humble Pie does a great slowed-down version of The Beatles "Rain".

  22. Let's see, The Carpenters "Ticket To Ride" springs to mind, Phil Collins "A Groovy Kind Of Love".

I'll link to the Carpenters one, though, because I like it better than Phil.

Does Clapton's acoustic "Layla" count? It's kind of a cover since the original was by Derek and the Dominos! :hide:
