Great album! I grew up with it! It's not a masterpiece, but a great collection of classics.
I have the Columbia (?) gold disc version - outstanding!
I wish all of Sly's stuff sounded this great!
Stand! is not a masterpiece? Different strokes for different folks indeed. Stand! is masterpiece material! The last great gasp of black optimism before There's a Riot Goin' On, What's Going On, and Innervisions. I saw the band playing these songs on a "Music Scene" dvd, and they were smoking! Here is the message of Stand!- Stand! but, don't call me ****** whitey, because I want to take you higher, besides, somebody's watching you, just sing a simple song, of course I am a sex machine, but you can make it if you try.
Looks like the PC police are watching me. I am just quoting the title of a classic song with a great message of racial respect. I believe you dishonor Sly's intentions with the ********.
I know, but it's to prevent people from getting offended, and to help prevent insensitive people from throwing that word around.
We all know the song title Matt - that script is just autoprotect from morons.
Good point though - I always liked "Riot" better, but there is an "optimism" about Stand that is undeniable. Given the context of the times it was released during, that optimism is very brave.
Too bad Sly fried himself. Between him and Syd Barrett, they tie for the biggest waste of talent to a destructive lifestyle.
Missed this thread last week. Just picked up the gold MasterSound used, and I agree with Gary. Fantastic sound.
And I think it's right up there in terms of songs with stuff like Curtis Mayfield's first. Awesome album.
That's the software doing that. The Gorts programmed it that way.
Grant has the right idea.
