Howard asked Smokey about some obscure Miracles songs.
I, too, put in Smokey in my car this morning.....one great song after another.
His solo work is spotty but some great songs there too.
Here is one of my favorite solo Smokey songs with Claudette

I've several of his recordings. Including "Ooo, baby, baby."

But I also like this version by Linda Rondstat, with the David Sanborn sax solos.

This one of his best songs as a solo artist. Check it out.

the ballad trilogy of 1965: Ooo Baby Baby followed by Tracks Of My Tears followed by My Girl Has Gone is one of the greatest 3 record runs ever. None made the pop top 10 but all three made the top 20 and I suspect they topped the R&B charts.

And to follow this run with the timeless dance track Going To A Go Go....Smokey was on a roll back then.

  6. His first four solo albums are his very best from his solo output.

I have 2002's 52-track collection Ooh Baby Baby: The Anthology, which was mastered by Kevin Reeves. I'm sorry to say I haven't listened to it in ages, because it's buried in a box among many of my unpacked CDs. I'm curious to know, though, if there's any Smokey/Miracles CD collection that beats it for sound quality. It contains a good number of then-new stereo mixes, and that idea itself runs counter to the fandom of mono Motown 45s. I've thought about simply picking up the first Hitsville USA box, as that set contains the mono single mixes of Motown's '60s prime. If I can't find an old thread here that addresses the aforementioned issues, I'd love for someone to give me some thoughts and/or suggestions.

For the record, I also have Smokey's The Solo Anthology and The Miracles' Love Machine: The '70s Collection, so I feel pretty well covered on the careers of all concerned.

And yes, Smokey Robinson's voice and songwriting are among the 20th century's greatest artistic treasures. I'm glad he's continued into the 21st, too.

I love Smokey Robinson. I like Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, I've got Going to a Go-Go and Anthology.

Oddly enough I like the Miracles better without Smokey and with Billy Griffin, The City of Angels is one of my favorites.

I like Smokey Robinson solo the best, I've got most of his solo albums, Warm Thoughts is my favorite, a brilliant album.

I really love their early Doo Wop stuff, many of which were collected on the "From The Beginning" double LP in '65.

    I like:
    - Mickey's Monkey
    - Going To A Go-Go
    - Being With You

    (+ many more)

...and I have fond memories of watching some older cheerleader girls doing their routines to Tears of a Clown.

I would love to get their stuff with Billy Griffin but I can't find their last three albums with motown on CD anywhere.

Good band, I like their music enough to have a greatest hits CD. Mickey's Monkey has always been my favourite ...

Top one is terrible in terms of sound. Bottom one is ok.
Best is Oooh Baby comp....although many of the tracks are in stereo (And miracles in Stereo is a good thing)

O bought the box set incredibly cheap at a show and love it though I wish it had more mono cuts. The OOP comp of B sides and album cuts on Rhino is a joy to listen to also. My favorite Smokey cover is Bob Brady and the Con Chords More, More, More of Your Love. A great 45 if you can find it. Too bad his band never had a CD comp.

  22. I believe so. I don't know if Hip-O continued after "Volume 6."
