If the censors had looked at the shot of Sally licking her teeth as long as I did, they'd have cut the scene out or killed the whole episode.

As much as I admire him, I must point out that besides being, well, a bandit (they did steal that beer, unless the proprietor knows where to locate "Big Enos B-e-r"), The Bandit is also a liar. He promised Foxy Lady that he would "come by and pay in person" and then he just blew her off.

Well, CBs were a kind of prehistoric internet.

What I want to know is:

    What about the clam chowder?!?!?

Did they ever answer this burning question in the sequel?

    A question well worth pondering!

Our good friends at mapquest.com tell us that Atlanta to Boston, and back, is 2214 miles. To pull that off in 18 hours would require an average speed of 123 mph. And that's not counting the time to actually secure the chowder, stop at a choke and puke or an eat-em-up joint or two, the occasional 10-100 (maybe even 10-200), and walking (and fishing out) Fred. My theory is that they failed, hence the whole adventure never being spoken of again in II and III.

I think Ch. 19 is the usual frequency people monitored. Do truckers still use CBs? Even ten years ago they were handy for keeping up on road conditions and speed-traps and the folks with hair dryers on the side of the road, but I suppose "there's an app for that." Before cell phones became common they were good for emergencies too.

That one cop taking a 10-100 is clearly going all over the inside of his door.

    And then there's this:

    Who opens Buford's door?...And why?

My theory is that when Buford left the door open, a bystander closed it for him out of respect for his years as a distinguished officer of the law with over 30 years seniority. That same helpful bystander then realized that the entire car was evidence - evidence that was going to convict a maniac - and that tampering with said evidence would be a crime, so the bystander quickly ran and returned the door to the open position just as the truck bore down on the car. Yeah, that's it.

Amazingly, the broadcast TV version replaced "loins" with "genes" in this scene. Who knew "loins" was a bad word?

Yes we still use them to monitor traffic conditions.
We run channel 17 up and down I-5 and 19 everywhere else.
    They still come in handy.
Those of us that venture into the woods still use them in our 4 X 4's.

For anyone deeply interested in "Smokey" scholarship with too much time on her/his hands, here is an early draft of the script:

    http://www.dailyscript.com/scripts/Smokey And The Bandit.txt

Most of the character names are different, there is no "Junior", Frog is the sheriff's daughter, and Bandit and The Snowman end the movie in handcuffs. The "When does the clock start?" question remains unanswered.

Most evident of all is the comic genius of Jackie Gleason. His claim to have totally rewritten the part of the sheriff is supported.

Compare: "I'm gonna get that bastard. No one makes Buell Clayton look like a fool. Let's get going" from the early draft to any of Jackie's great monologues in the finished film. Genius I tell ya!

And while we're at, here's the trailer for the abandoned version of III, "Smokey IS the Bandit", where Gleason played both roles leaving test audiences utterly confused. Footage of Jackie as The Bandit was scrapped, additional footage was shot with Jerry Reed, and the whole pile of monkey nuts was unleashed on an unsuspecting public.

    Jackie as The Bandit:
