I don't know about any DNR values, I just A B them in iTunes and all the songs sounds exactly the same, even down to the track times.
They may have done some electronic touch ups for the ipod age, but these are the same deal as 2009.
I'll stick with my 1994 Virgin special case version, thanks.

But listen to Claudette or No Spare Parts, (I'm sure some parts may have been re-recorded) but it really shows you how good a remix would have sounded.

I didn't A/B them against anything either. I just popped in the disc and immediately thought it sounded like crap. I only have my original vinyl pressing (pre-cover switcheroo) to compare to.

I'm two for two on purchasing crappy sounding "2011 remasters" consecutively. The first was Nirvana Nevermind.

  5. The big question is if they are using the remaster sourcemformthis album for this download. If so I still wouldn't see all that much value in downloading it.

One would have to assume that it's the same overblown crap master - just in a higher resolution.

Stands to reason - if a "new" DR 13-14 level master was out there - someone would have said something by now.

It's due to be released on SHM-SACD in January, I think, as part of a series of Stones releases on SHM-SACD that are highly regarded by most on this forum. So, fingers are crossed that HDtracks is from this source and not the new CDs...

Is it my imagination or are lots of the pics in the CD booklet that comes with the blu-ray / CD of Live In Texas of the Stones on their 75 tour?! Jagger's hair looks far longer than it was in 78 and he's wearing those baggy trousers.

The CD booklet is actually a replica of the Tour Program from 78. As it was prepared before the tour, they used pictures from 1975.

This is correct. I still have my program from the Oakland show. The photos in the tour book were also used in the famous Terry Southern/Leibowitz (sp?)/Sykes coffeetable book of the '75 U.S. Tour which came out (if I'm remembering this correctly) just before the time of the '78 Tour.

Can anyone comment on the SQ of the HDtracks version?

I've never owned it on cd. I realy liked the two big hits, after the fact - when I heard them as a kid - but the rest of the album that my aunt or uncle had that I first listened to was ok to me those few times I heard it. I remember hearing Shattered, When The Whip Comes Down, and Respectable, then, and later on the radio, and I liked them, but not crazy about them. Same with Far Away Eyes and Just My Imagination. Liked 'em, not like wild about them. I remember hearing Before They Make Me Run and wondering what kind of voice and singing that was supposed to be! I was young, ;). So, years later, it sort of fell by the wayside for me, until getting more into the Stones music (young, middle, and old) through the forum. So, I guess, the remaster sounds lousy, really bad, and the '94 remaster is the one to get, and I'm buying this release for the bonus disc and the relative newness of revisiting the proper album more closely as an adult, :), albeit a not-so-pleasing listening copy of it. Oh well!

I'm not sure I agree with this but, even if I did, wouldn't that be a logical result of Jagger's voice being 5 years older, as well as the production being that much closer to a contemporary sound?

Quite possibly. I know you tend to be a staunch defender of the Exile modern-day overdubs, but my remarks weren't intended to knock the Exile tracks. As you point out, the material on Some Girls had a more contemporary sound to it, so post-production work doesn't have such an obvious feel as it does on raw, rhythm and blues recordings from the early '70s.

Wow these lost tracks are great

I got the HDTracks download today. It sounds good, though I do think it is overly compressed. I have not compared it to my CD and don't have the vinyl anymore. I've attached a waveform. the bonus tracks are definitely worth grabbing. Great stuff.

By the way, now we have Ft. Worth 78 and Brussels 73 released officially, as well and there is talk of more archival live releases. Maybe Mick was reading your posts on here, since we now know he is addicted to the internet.

I (briefly) compared Miss You and a few other tracks from the HD Tracks download, to the Virgin 1994 remaster.

My quick opinion is the HD Tracks sounds marginally better. I'm a little disappointed in the sound quality, but I never thought Some Girls sounded all that great.

That being said, I don't regret the purchase at all, as the new tracks are great, and I haven't bought any incarnation of Some Girls since 1994.

looks like a visual to a slamming rock track to me more than a brickwalled mess though.

Well, you know my original statement was made prior to the Ft. Worth and Brussels releases. The band really came through (although I would like to see Brussels and other future releases be issued on silver discs). The Some Girls bonus tracks are a pleasant surprise. Based on the inconsistent results from the Exile bonus tracks, I had legitimate reasons to be doubtful.

You never know! In all seriousness, I have been listening to both live releases non-stop the past couple of days. I never thought we would see the day when two vintage Stones live releases would have be issued during the same week. Amazing. What a great time to be a Stones fan.

I watched the Fort Worth 78 DVD last night, and that's how I prefer to remember the Stones - that was their absolute peak, in this fan's eyes.

I'm grateful for the the recent releases of the complete Ed Sullivan appearances, the Ladies and Gentlemen DVD, and the Brussels Affair download, but the new Some Girls deluxe edition and the Fort Worth DVD are the best treasures from the Stones vault yet.

A cut that amazes me both on the audio and displayed wonderfully on the DVD is "Happy." The song seems to be hanging on by a string...going a hundred miles an hour, almost seemingly about to fall off the track; both Mick and Keith share singing duties and they are literally dancing/ducking/diving around the mic...it's wonderful to watch. Such a great example of the Stones being completely in tune with the music and most important of all: each other.

The sound on the blu-ray is excellent...the VQ is ok...I guess they did the best they could with what they had . I didn't expect much from this blu-ray but it's well worth 15 bucks.
